Library seeks donations

WAYNESBORO—At a place where borrowing and loans are the order of the day, revenue needs to come in to keep the doors open, and library officials are asking for help.

“In order to buy books, pay staff, keep the building in repair and maintain technology, we really need any help that you can afford,” said Linda May, executive director of Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library in a letter to patrons and subscribers.

Like many businesses and families, the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the library, forcing it to shut down for 15 months.

“Since June 2021 when we reopened, we’ve welcomed 23,000 people through our doors and since January, 2021 we have had over 700 programs both in-person and virtual,” May said. “While we plan to continue to produce our popular online programs into the future, we hope to increase the number of in-person programs every month.”

May said unfortunately, state and county funding provides only about 60% of what the library needs annually to operate. No funding comes from the Borough of Waynesboro or the federal government.

“Next year, we may face cuts to that capital depending on what the state legislature decides,” she said.

Consequently, library officials are hoping the community will step up to make up the funding deficit.

May said matching donors are ready for those who reach the $500, $2500 and $5,000 giving levels, but any gift would be appreciated.

“For those of you who were fortunate enough this year to stay healthy, retain your job and keep your businesses afloat: please share what you can. Any amount will go directly into helping people who haven’t been as fortunate and rely on our community resources at the library,” May said.

To donate, readers may send a check to the AHMFL, 45 E. Main St., Waynesboro, PA 17268 or through the website.
