Shepherd U football concludes 10-1 regular season with rout of winless Clarion
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Junior quarterback Tyson Bagent (Martinsburg, W.Va./Martinsburg) completed 32-of-45 passes for 447 yards and four touchdowns to lead Shepherd University (10-1) to a 55-0 win over Clarion (0-10) in football action at Ram Stadium on Saturday.
Shepherd took a 7-0 lead when sophomore running back Ronnie Brown (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) scored on a 15-yard run with 7:08 left in the first quarter. Senior kicker Hayden August-Scriven (North Potomac, Md./Quince Orchard) added the extra point
August-Scriven connected on a 20-yard field goal with11:54 left in the second quarter to up the lead to 10-0.
Bagent teamed with Brown on a 39-yard scoring pass with 6:16 left in the second quarter.
Shepherd took a 24-0 lead into the break as Bagent teamed with graduate student wide receiver Josh Gontarek (New Market, Md./Linganore/Shippensburg) on a nine-yard scoring strike with 14 seconds left in the half.
Shepherd opened up the second half scoring when redshirt-freshman defensive back Devon Lynch (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) blocked a punt out of the end zone for a safety with 13:42 left in the third quarter.
Zech Sanderson completed 8-of-16 passes for 53 yards for Clarion.
Running back Ty Hebron (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) had 10 carries for 60 yards and a score to lead the Shepherd ground game. Khalil Owens had 10 carries for 18 yards to pace the Golden Eagles.
Shepherd amassed 623 yards of total offense while limiting Clarion to 119 total yards.
Shepherd volleyball concludes regular season by sweeping Millersville
MILLERSVILLE – Shepherd University (23-3, 12-2 PSAC East) swept Millersville (11-20, 6-9 PSAC East) in volleyball action in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Rams posted a 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 win. Junior outside hitter Kiara Rakestraw (Uhrichsville, Ohio/Indian Valley) recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs to lead the Rams. Junior outside hitter Kitanna Rakestraw (Uhrichsville, Ohio/Indian Valley) added eight kills, while junior outside hitter Mikaylah Hoy (Sharpsburg, Md./Heritage Academy) had six kills and 10 digs.
Sophomore setter Victoria Nicholes (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) posted 27 assists, while redshirt-freshman defensive specialist/libero Claire Ellis (Louisa, Va./Saint Catherine’s School) recorded 15 digs
The Rams return to action Tuesday when they host a yet to be determined opponent at 7 p.m. in first round action of the PSAC Tournament.
Shepherd U. men’s basketball team splits two overtime games
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jalen Seegars scored a game-high 20 points to lead Fayetteville State to a 57-56 overtime win over Shepherd University in the season opener for both schools at the Dave Russell Conference Challenge at the Butcher Center on Friday night.
Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored 12 points and grabbed six boards to lead the Rams. He hit on 5-of-8 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from three-point range. Daggett added a game-high three blocked shots.
Sophomore guard Daniel McClain-Corley (Clinton, Md./Massanutten Military Academy) added 11 points, a game-high six assists, and five rebounds, while senior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) contributed eight points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Darian Dixon added 15 points and Cress Worthy added 11 for the visiting Broncos.
It was a close game throughout, Shepherd took a 47-45 lead with 2:14 left in regulation after a dunk by Daggett. Seegars hit a jumper with 11 seconds left to force the extra session.
On Saturday, McClain-Corley poured in a game and career-high 25 points and added six assists to lead Shepherd to an 88-81 overtime win over Bowie State in men’s basketball action at the Butcher Center.
McClain-Corley connected on 8 of18 field goal attempts with a 4-of-9 effort from three-point range. He connected on 5 of 6 free throws.
Stephens had 22 points and five assists, while junior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Daggett contributed 13 points and six boards.
Quinton Drayton had 22 points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Bowie State Bulldogs. Ayan Teel added 21 points and a game-high nine assists.
Teel hit a layup with one second remaining in regulations to force overtime.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Frostburg State for a 7 p.m. game.
Shepherd U. women’s basketball teams runs to two wins
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Shepherd University women’s basketball team opened its season with two wins at the PSAC/MEC Challenge at Frostburg State over the weekend.
On Friday, junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgely, W.Va./Frankfort) recorded 24 points, nine assists, seven rebounds, and four steals to lead Shepherd to a 90-61 win over Davis & Elkins.
Beeman hit on 9 of 16 field goal attempts and made two three-ponters. She made all four of her free throws.
Graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John’s) added 15 points, while junior forward Cara Minor (Hundred, W.Va./North Marion) was also in double figures with 10 points.
On Saturday, Shepherd outscored Frostburg State 15-3 in the final quarter en route to a 72-60 win over the Bobcats .
The Rams were again led by Beeman with a game-high 28 points. She added seven rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Clayton added 21 points and eight rebounds, while graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) tossed in 17 points.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday when they host Bowie State for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
