Editor’s note: This is the first in a series of articles on where to “shop local, shop small” in and around Waynesboro.

ROUZERVILLE—Katelyn Brown knows how quickly kids grow—and outgrow their clothes.

The mother of three children, ages 2, 4 and 7, knows how frustrating it can be to be looking at a closetful of items, but none in the right size after an unexpected growth spurt.

“We had a joke going about opening a consignment store,” Brown said. “We laughed … until June.”

That’s when Brown, of Waynesboro, had an unexpected growth spurt of her own after being let go from her job and decided she could, indeed, open a kids’ consignment store, Kidcycle.

“We didn’t have anything close without driving 30 minutes to Chambersburg,” Brown said. “I figured we’ll do it and see how it goes.”

Brown said she researched and worked with her mother, who owns a business, and an attorney to work out the important details.

“The beginning of July, we started posting [on social media] that we were taking consignments. We were hoping to open in August, but we filled the store in five days,” she said.

Kidcycle has almost 13,000 items in its inventory and offers clothing for infants through teens size 18/20, as well as toys, books, furniture and almost all the gear you might need to raise a child.

The store provides relief not just to local parents looking to clothe their growing kids, but also to those looking to upcycle outgrown items of their own.

The store accepts items on consignment.

“As long as it pertains to babies, kids and teens, we take it,” Brown said.

Consignors get a 50/50 split with the store on items sold. “They get a check every 30 days,” explained Megan Hollenshead, store manager.

Consignments are accepted daily during store hours and no appointment is needed. “As long as we’re open, we’ll look at [items],” Hollenshead said.

And unlike traditional stores, there is no seasonal limit on items in store. “We offer all seasons of clothes,” Hollenshead said. “That way if you’re taking the kids somewhere warm in the middle of winter, you can get clothes here.”

Kidcycle is located 2401 E. Main St., Waynesboro. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Closed Sundays.
