ELIZABETHTOWN – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity wrestling team made the trip to Elizabethtown High School on Saturday for the Grizzly Duals and returned home with four wins under its collective belt.

The Indians went 4-1 on the day, with the lone loss coming against host Elizabethtown, 44-30. Waynesboro defeated Palmyra 45-27, York Tech 66-3, Wyomissing 58-18 and Muhlenberg 48-27.

“The boys really wanted to do well in support of the twins (Bodie and Kaden Rouzer) and assistant coach Mike Rouzer, who lost Mindy this week to cancer this week. It was also really good for the team to get some team wins; we have had a very tough schedule,” said Waynesboro head coach David Swink. “I was proud of the boys and how they performed over the weekend without senior standouts Bodie and Kaden Rouzer.

“To be honest it really was a preview of what next year’s team will look like. We had two freshman, seven sophomores, one junior, and one senior in our starting line-up. We’re very young.”

Stand-out performances on the day came from Jayden Rooney, Robert Howard and Titus Mong. All were 5-0. Luke Lehr was 4-0 and both Garrett Price and James Crutchfield were 4-1.

Waynesboro trailed Muhlenberg 12-0 but stormed back to win eight straight matches, including five by fall, to take a 45-12 lead. The Indians erased a 6-6 tie against Wyomissing by winning eight consecutive bouts, with five coming by fall. The Tribe won seven of eight contested matches by pin against York Tech.

“It was also nice to see the boys wrestling aggressively as a team on their feet and also completing so many matches on the day with pins, 28 wins by fall,” Swink said. “We will compete next at home vs Chambersburg on Wednesday.”

Varsity action will follow the middle school matchup, which begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday. Waynesboro will then make the short trip to Greencastle on Thursday to compete against Greencastle-Antrim in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet.
