Shepherd men’s basketball team downs division-leading Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.– Senior forward Kyle Daggett (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) scored 25 points to lead Shepherd University (11-13, 7-11 PSAC) to an 89-71 upset win over first-place Millersville (21-5, 15-5 PSAC) in PSAC men’s Eastern Divisiion basketball action Wednesday night.

Sophomore guard Phillip Jordan (Rockville, Md./St. Albans) added 22, while senior guard Cam Stephens (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) tossed in 20.

Daggett also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds, and Stephens handed out a game-high five assists.

Junior guard Jon Preston (Brandywine, Md./Rock Creek Christian) added eight points and seven boards.

Shepherd had a 45-27 lead at the half.

Ryan Davis scored 18 points to pace the Marauders. James Sullivan added 14 points.

Shepherd took a double-digit lead midway through the first half and maintained it the remainder of the game.

Shepherd connected on 61.1 percent (33-54) from the floor with a 55 percent (11-20) performance from beyond the arc for the game. The Rams hit 85.7 percent (12-14) of their free throws.

Millersville shot 45.5 percent (25-55) from the floor with a 30.8 percent effort (8-26) from three-point range. The Marauders shot 76.5 percent (13-17) from the foul line.

Shepherd had a 39-25 advantage on the boards. Shepherd forced 12 turnovers and committed nine. Shepherd had a 3-2 edge in steals. 

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 3 p.m. contest.

Shepherd player named Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week

SLIPPERY ROCK — Graduate student pitcher Austin Crebs (Wheeling, W.Va./Wheeling Central Catholic/Fairleigh Dickinson) of the Shepherd University baseball team has been named National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Week.

Crebs scattered four hits over six innings in Shepherd’s season-opening win over Coker on Friday. He allowed two runs (one earned) and fanned six and walked none.

Shepherd women’s basketball team routs Millersville

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va.  – Graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield)  scored 25 points and graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John’s) added 23 to lead Shepherd University (19-6, 13-6 PSAC) to an 88-66 win over Millersville (7-18, 6-14 PSAC) in PSAC women’s basketball action at the Butcher Center on Wednesday night.

McLaughlin hit on 8-15 field goals with a 4-of-8 effort from three-point range. She was 5-for-5 from the foul line.

Clayton connected on 11-of-16 field goals with a 1-of-1 effort from the charity stripe. She added a game-high 10 rebounds to post her seventh double-double of the season.

Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) added 15 points, 10 assists, five boards, and three steals. Beeman registered her sixth double-double of the year.

Lauren Lister scored 22 points to pace the Marauders. She needs just three points to reach 2,000 points for her career. Christa Ricks added 13 points and Makiah Shaw tossed in 11.

Shepherd had a 42-29 lead at the half.

Shepherd shot 52.2 percent (35-67) from the floor with a 38.9 percent effort (7-18) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 100 percent (11-11) of their free throws.

Millersville hit on 46.9 percent (30-64) from the floor with a 25 percent effort (2-8) from three-point range for the game. The Marauders connected on 40 percent (4-10) of their free throws.

Shepherd had a 37-31 advantage on the boards.  Shepherd forced 18 turnovers and committed 14. Millersville had an 8-7 edge in steals.

The Rams return to action on Saturday when they travel to East Stroudsburg for a 1 p.m. contest.
