Shippensburg University softball team extends winning streak

THE VILLAGES, Fla. — The Shippensburg University softball team extended its winning streak to four games on Thursday with a pair of victories, defeating Lake Erie, 5-1, and Wayne State (Neb.), 17-2.

Shippensburg (7-4) cranked out 27 more hits, bringing its team season batting average to .348 through the first 11 games. Freshman Alicia Ball (Woodstock, Va./Central) and redshirt-sophomore Maddie Uschock (Irwin/Hempfield Area (Dominican (N.Y.)) combined to allow just one run between them in the circle.

Freshman Emma Mackulin (West Mifflin/West Mifflin Area) had a memorable day at the plate, going 6-for-7 over the course of the two games. She finished with three RBIs, two runs and reached base seven total times as she was also hit by a pitch.

Senior Morgan DeFeo (West Grove/Avon Grove) remained torrid atop the Raider lineup by going 7-for-9 at the plate with three doubles, four RBIs, five runs, a stolen base, and her first career home run. 

Junior Hannah Marsteller (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) had four more hits and three RBIs.

The Raiders are off Friday and will play two more games in Florida on Saturday before returning home, facing West Virginia Wesleyan and Ashland.

Two Shippensburg men’s basketball players earn PSAC honors

SHIPPENSBURG — The Shippensburg University men’s basketball team had two of its players selected to the 2021-22 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division First Team recently, as both graduate Jake Biss (Latrobe/Greater Latrobe) and redshirt junior Rashon Johnson (Philadelphia./Simon Gratz (Highland C.C.)) were recognized.

Voting is conducted by the head coaches in the Eastern Division and released through the conference office.

Biss earned his third consecutive All-PSAC First Team classification and the third overall All-PSAC award of his career. This season, Biss has led the team in points per game (16.9), assists per game (3.7), three-pointers made per game (2.5), three-point percentage (38.7), steals per game (1.4), and minutes per game (35.6).

Johnson earned his first career All-PSAC classification after playing his previous two seasons at Highland (Kan.) Community College. He ranked second among Raiders this season in both points per game (16.0) and rebounds per game (7.4). Johnson also averaged 1.5 assists and ranked third on the team with 1.2 steals.

The 2021-22 PSAC Eastern Division major award winners were East Stroudsburg’s Carlos Pepin (PSAC East Athlete of the Year), Millersville’s Caden Najdawi (PSAC East Defensive Athlete of the Year), Mansfield’s Justice Smith (PSAC East Rookie of the Year) and Millersville’s Casey Stitzel (PSAC East Coach of the Year).

Shepherd star makes All-Atlantic Region women’s basketball team

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WVA — Junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) of the Shepherd University women’s basketball team has been named to the D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Team. 

Beeman, a first-team selection, leads the Rams in scoring (18.8 ppg), assists (7.7 apg), and steals (2.7 spg). She also tops the team in three-pointers (71) and minutes played (1155). She leads NCAA II in assists (239) and assists per game. Beeman also ranks sixth nationally in steals (85). She was a four-time PSAC East Athlete of the Week honoree this season. Beeman scored 20 points or more in 15 games and has handed out eight assists or more in 18 games. 

Sports information directors from NCAA Division II Atlantic Region schools and conferences selected the two all-region teams. The process concludes with All-American selections announced later in the month. The Atlantic Region consists of schools from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), the MEC and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), along with independents Bluefield State and Salem.
