Shippensburg wrestler wins D2 All-American honors
ST. LOUIS — Shippensburg University’s Tyshawn White (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) capped off a phenomenal season on Saturday with a third-place finish at 125 pounds at the 2022 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, earning All-America honors in action at St. Louis.
White is the first Raider to earn All-America honors at 125 pounds since Chris Kochinsky placed fourth in 2011 and the highest-placing Raider All-American at 125 pounds in 16 years, since Jamie Thomas was the 2006 runner-up.
Overall for the season, White finished with an 11-2 record in his debut season with the Raiders.
“I’m very proud of Tyshawn’s accomplishments this season,” head coach Seth Bloomquist said. “Tyshawn put it all together at the right time. He has worked extremely hard to make his goal of becoming an All-American.”
White is the fifth Raider All-American under Bloomquist, joining Evan Ramos (4th at 197 in 2018; 5th at 197 in 2017), Chris Kochinsky (4th at 125 in 2011) and Chris Barrick (5th at 174 in 2010).
Shippensburg softball team concludes Florida swing with a win
THE VILLAGES, FLA. — The Shippensburg University softball team concluded its week in Florida with a 4-0 shutout over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.
Shippensburg (8-4) received a shutout in the circle from freshman Alicia Ball (Woodstock, Va./Central), who allowed just five singles, walked two and struck out seven in the complete game.
The Raiders held a 2-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth when freshman Katelyn Minney (Lititz/Warwick) hit a two-run homer to extend the lead to 4-0. Minney and freshman Morgan Brumbaugh (McVeytown/Mount Union Area) each had two hits in the game.
The Raiders will head home from Florida on a five-game winning streak. SU posted a 6-2 record overall in Florida.
Shippensburg has three road doubleheaders scheduled for the coming week, beginning with a Wednesday twinbill at Chestnut Hill.
Shepherd University women knocked out of NCAA basketball tourney
GLENVILLE, WVA – Dazha Congleton scored a game-high 27 points to lead third-ranked Glenville State (31-1) to an 82-70 win over Shepherd University (25-8) in semifinal action of the NCAA II Atlantic Regional Tournament action Saturday..
Graduate student forward Sydney Clayton (Frederick, Md./St. John’s) led the Rams with 26 points. She connected on 12-of-21 field goals with a 2-of-2 effort from the foul line.
Sophomore guard Jordan Smith (Manassas, Va./Colgan) added a season-high14 points, while graduate student guard Marley McLaughlin (Haymarket, Va./Battlefield) and junior guard Abby Beeman (Ridgeley, W.Va./Frankfort) each scored 11. Beeman added a game and career-high 15 assists to post her 10th double-double of the season.
Senior guard Hannah Myers (York/Eastern York) grabbed a career and game-high 12 rebounds for the Rams.
Zakiyah Winfield added 19 points and 10 boards for the Pioneers. Re’Shawna Stone added 14 points.
Clayton scored 17 points and Beeman had 10 assists in the first half to help Shepherd take a 43-42 lead into the break.
Glenville State took a 59-58 lead into the fourth quarter. The Pioneers outscored Shepherd, 23-12, in the final stanza to pull away for the win. Clayton missed much of the quarter due to foul trouble, and she fouled out with 1:36 left. The Pioneers finished the game on a 12-2 run.
Shepherd shot 52.5 percent (31-59) from the floor with a 33.3 percent effort (4-12) from three-point range for the game. The Rams connected on 100 percent (4-4) of their free throws.
Glenville State hit on 47.8 percent (32-67) from the floor with a 21.1 percent effort (4-19) from three-point range for the game. The Pioneers connected on 63.6 percent (14-22) of their free throws.
Shepherd had a 33-30 edge in rebounding. Shepherd forced 14 turnovers and committed 24.
The loss finishes the season for Shepherd.
