Shippensburg University men show well in opening outdoor track meet
LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Shippensburg University men’s outdoor track & field team completed the season-opening weekend in solid fashion at the Dr. Jack L. Toms Alumni Invitational hosted by Lynchburg. The Raiders battled cold and windy conditions.
Shamar Jenkins (Souderton/Souderton) won the triple jump on Saturday to record a NCAA-provisional qualifying mark. Jenkins had a top jump of 48 feet, 6 ¾ inches, equaling his best performance of the 2021 season and also equaling the top mark in the PSAC recorded last week by Cal U’s Jalen Cloud.
The Raiders amassed 24 performances on the weekend that satisfied the more rigid Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standards. Half of those efforts came in throws, with Alec Rideout (Canonsburg/Canon-McMillan) winning the shot put on a top throw of 51 feet, 8 ½ inches and Mike Folcarelli (Altoona/Altoona Area) winning the javelin throw held Friday mark with a top mark of 184 feet, 11 inches.
Jordan Winslow (Belleville, N.J./Milton Hershey (Pa.)) won the high jump competition, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 4 inches to set his early-season standard. Nate Reed (Chambersburg/Chambersburg Area) took second in long jump with a top mark of 22 feet, 7 inches.
The sprinters had a solid start to the season, particularly in the 100 meters. Eric Kirk (Coatesville/Coatesville Area) ran a collegiate PR in the 100 meters of 10.59 seconds in the semifinals and Stephon Brown (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin East) ran his first collegiate open 100 meters and clocked in at 10.61 seconds in the semifinals.
Mo Whittle (Tobyhanna/Pocono Mountain West) ran 10.98 seconds in the semifinals; all three men more than satisfied the league standard.
Drew Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) won the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:57.55 and Ian Sherlock (Hopewell/Northern Bedford County) ran third in 3:59.03. Both times are PSAC cuts. Dailey also ran third in the 800 with a PSAC cut of 1:56.81. Robbie Hrabosky II (Elizabeth/Elizabeth Forward) took third in the 400-meter hurdles with a PSAC qualifier of 56.12 seconds.
Shippensburg women drop opening PSAC tennis match
SHIPPENSBURG – The Shippensburg University women’s tennis team came up short in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener on Tuesday, falling 4-3 to Kutztown on a sunny and chilly afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (0-8, 0-1 PSAC East) earned its three points in singles play from senior Jenna Sluymer (Nieuw-Vennep, The Netherlands/Haarlemmermeer Lyceum, Hoofddorp), freshman Kendall Winters (Lancaster/Lampeter Strasburg) and sophomore Merel Hoekstra (Wassenaar, The Netherlands/Rijnlands Lyceum Wassenaar).
