CHAMBERSBURG—The Franklin County Commissioners have declared April 3-9, 2022, to be Franklin County Public Library Week and are urging residents to connect with their local libraries by taking advantage of the services and resources available through libraries in their communities.
While the word ‘library’ may conjure images of a large building filled with rows of books and reference materials, libraries are much more than just book repositories. Libraries serve as valuable pillars of communities and are symbols of democracy, promoting the free exchange of ideas and information as well as personal growth and life-long learning.
The American Library Association estimates the U.S. is home to more than 116,000 libraries, including public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries and specialty libraries that pertain to specific professions, religions and other niche groups. Locally, there are seven public libraries in Franklin County, six of which are served by the Franklin County Library System.
These libraries are continuously adapting and expanding their services to meet the needs of their communities and the individuals they serve. While patrons can still borrow books in a traditional format, many libraries now offer e-books, audiobooks and DVDs. Libraries also provide access to computers, the internet and other digital technology as well as personal enrichment activities and classes on a wide range of topics for a variety of audiences and ages. Other libraries extend their reach by bringing books and materials directly to consumers through bookmobiles.
By observing Franklin County Public Library Week, the commissioners have acknowledged the critical impact well-funded public libraries have on improving the quality of life for everyone.
The commissioners also presented a certificate of appreciation to outgoing Franklin County Library System Executive Director Bernice Crouse “in recognition of her dedication, service and leadership through over 20 years of service” in that role. Crouse is retiring after nearly four decades of service and commitment to public libraries in Franklin and Fulton counties.
