The Institute invites area families on a free, guided hike along the Appalachian Trail on Sunday, April 24 from 1 to 3 p.m.

With guidance from an Institute naturalist, hikers will discover some of the wonders of the season in the woods and along the byways.

“This month, we will see signs of the coming of spring,” said Dave Graff, The Institute’s watershed science coordinator who will lead the hike. “For example, trees starting to leaf out, the return of the ‘snowbirds’ or the arrival of the migrating warblers and other birds that spent their winters down south.”

“Many of the birds are small and difficult to spot so binoculars are recommended,” Graff said, “but we will be listening to the birds because they tend to be very vocal when they arrive back home and are trying to establish territories and attract mates.”

The hike is one of a series of Appalachian Trail hikes planned for the last Sunday of each month through May 2022, as part of The Institute’s Naturalist Discovery Series.

The activity is geared for families with children age 7 and older.

Participation is free, but pre-registration is required. Register via email at info@natureandcultureinstitute.org. The meeting place for the hike will be sent upon registration.

COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed.

This program series is sponsored by Pam and Bruce Rowland, and by The Institute’s Today’s Horizon Fund Contributors: The Nora Roberts Foundation; The John R. Hershey Jr. and Anna L. Hershey Family Foundation; APX Enclosures, Inc.; The Carolyn Terry Eddy Family: Carolyn, with daughters Connie Fleagle & Kim Larkin.
