Shippensburg baseball team complete sweep of Salem

SHIPPENSBURG – The Shippensburg University baseball team completed its three-game weekend series on Saturday with a 7-0 victory to sweep Salem at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (21-20) totaled 11 hits and scored its first run off the first of two home runs in the game by senior Lake Lloyd (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron), a solo shot off the fencing at Seth Grove Stadium in the second inning.

In the fourth inning, Shippensburg boosted its lead to 5-0 and finished its scoring in the fifth off of Lloyd’s second home run, a two-run shot that brought home redshirt-sophomore Justin Byler (Lititz/Warwick (Delaware/Louisburg)).

Freshman Carter Hinds (Warrington/Central Bucks South) was 3-for-4 and also drew a walk, reaching base four times. In the fourth, he singled through the left side, sending sophomore Andrew Chronister (Dover/Dover Area). Hinds scored on an error, and senior Ben Werkheiser (Doylestown/Germantown Academy (Delaware)) doubled to left field to send graduate JuJu Cason (East Arcadia, N.C./North Brunswick (Belmont Abbey)) and sophomore Joe Barbera (Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) home.

The SU pitching staff only allowed four hits and struck out five in the win – its second shutout of the weekend and its seventh of the season. Junior Noah Nabholz (Pottsville/Pottsville) started and threw six innings without allowing any Salem (14-31) hits. Nabholz walked six and struck out four.
