Waynesboro sweeps Fairfield in track and field
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro boys’ and girls’ track and field teams turned in dominant performances against visiting Fairfield on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Indians defeated the Green Knights 117-33 and the girls pulled away for a 118-32 triumph at the Charles A. “Rip” Engle Sports Complex.
Boys Track & Field
Waynesboro won all three relay events to give the Tribe 15 points.
The 400-relay team of Isaiah Worthy, Brodie Rhodes, Preston Hammond and Jaylon Bean turned in a time of 45.4 seconds. The 1600 relay foursome of Dillon Turner, Michael Calo, Joseph Jacobs and Isaac Moats crossed the finish line in 3:59.5 seconds, while the 3200-relay team of Noah Bockstie, Jonathan Helman, Jamison Bowie and William Campbell won with a time of 10:50.9.
In the individual track events, Rhodes won the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds and finished second in the 200. Bean won the 200 with a time of 23.0 seconds. Calo won the 400 in 55.8.
Jacobs won the 800-meter run, which is essentially a two-lap dash. He finished in 2:10.0. Moats won the mile-run (4:45.1) and Jacobs won the two-miler, edging out Moats by one-hundredth of a second. Jacobs finished in 10:26.1.
Shockey won the 110-meter hurdles in 17.6 seconds. Teammate Turner won the 300 hurdles (44.9).
Bean won two of the three jumping events. He was victorious in the triple jump with a jump of 40 feet, 7 ½ inches. He also won the long jump (20 4 ½).
Bryson Shaull was the winner of the javelin throw (146 feet, 3 inches) and placed second in the shot put (35 feet, 6 inches).
Finally, Ernest Skehan won the pole vault with a height of 12 feet.
Girls track and field
On the girls’ side, the Maidens also won all three relay events to contribute to the decisive win.
In the 1600 relay, Emma Swanson, Megan Miller, Isabella Ruefle and True Benshoff won with a time of 4:40.0. Nora Dickey, Anasztazya Arellano, Gracie French and Jada Creager combined to win the 400 relay in 51.7 seconds. Cora Helman, Aria Roell, Maia McDonald and Kayla Thompson each ran two laps in winning the 3200 relay (12:11.5).
French was the winner of the 200 with a time of 27.3 seconds. She placed second in the 100 hurdles. Creager won the 100 in 12.8 seconds, while Ruefle won the 1600 (5:41.4) and the 3200 (12:37.9).
Waynesboro posted first places in all three jumps. Benshoff won the long jump (16 ½). Ana Enfusse won the triple jump (29-2 ¾) and Emily Knott won the high jump (4-6).
Creager won the pole vault (8-0).
Eve Avey was the winner of the shot put (27-5); Ella Lowry won the javelin throw (79-11).
Waynesboro concludes the dual meet portion of the schedule next Tuesday with a Mid-Penn Colonial Division matchup at Greencastle-Antrim.
SOFTBALL: Waynesboro puts up 21 runs on James Buchanan
MERCERSBURG – When the Waynesboro Maidens offense gets rolling, it really gets rolling.
The Maidens amassed 21 runs against Mid-Penn Colonial Division opponent James Buchanan on Thursday and came away with a 21-11 victory to improve to 10-3 overall and 7-2 in the division.
Waynesboro won despite being outhit 15-11 in the game. What did help, in addition to Alex Monk’s two home runs and Slaydon Fisher’s homer, was 10 walks issued by three James Buchanan pitchers.
The Maidens trailed 4-1 entering the top of the third inning. Waynesboro erupted for 11 runs in the inning to take a 12-4 lead.
The Maidens tacked on six more runs in the fourth frame and three more in the fifth to take a 21-7 lead into the home fifth. The Rockets tallied four runs, but not enough to keep the game from being called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Zoie Singrey was 3-for-3 with four runs scored for Waynesboro. Monk scored two runs and drove in five. Abby McElroy had two hits, scored a run and had four RBIs, while Riley Shetler had a hits, three runs and four RBIs.
Waynesboro hosts Northern York on Tuesday in a league game at 4:15 p.m.
