ShipU baseball comes up short

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Shippensburg University baseball team came up short in its regular-season finale Sunday, dropping a 10-3 decision to No. 16 West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Fairchild Field.

Shippensburg (26-22, 16-8 PSAC East) fell behind in the first inning and could not erase its early deficit against West Chester (29-10, 17-7). The loss resulted in the Golden Rams earning the Eastern Division No. 2 seed, and the Raiders earning the No. 3 seed in the upcoming PSAC Championships.

SU snuck a run across in the third inning when graduate Jordan Yoder (Ronks/Conestoga Valley (Cecil College/Liberty)) singled with two outs, stole second, and then came home on an RBI-single by graduate JuJu Cason (East Arcadia, N.C./North Brunswick (Belmont Abbey)).

In the eighth, sophomore Joe Barbera (Harrisburg/Bishop McDevitt) hit a sacrifice fly to second base and senior Justin Darden (Mountain Top/Crestwood) delivered an RBI single.

Noah Nabholz (Pottsville/Pottsville) threw the first two innings, with redshirt freshman Cameron Goble (Pittsburgh./Moon Township (VCU)), redshirt freshman Brock Piper (Newville/Big Spring (George Mason)), sophomore Ethan Miller (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) and sophomore Austen Labarre (Nazareth/Pen Argyl) working in relief.

Shippensburg softball team awaits tournament selection show

QUAKERTOWN – The Shippensburg University softball team won a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference elimination game Thursday over Gannon, 6-5 in eight innings, to set up an elimination game with Bloomsburg.

SU rallied from 6-3 down in its final at-bat to take a 7-6 lead against Bloomsburg entering the bottom of the seventh, but the Raiders fell to the Huskies on a walk-off walk, 8-7, to conclude their stay at the PSAC tournament at Veterans Park.

Shippensburg (31-18) will now await the NCAA Selection Show (Monday, 10 a.m. on ncaa.com) to see if it is awarded a regional tournament bid.

The Raiders totaled 22 hits over the two games — 11 hits in each game. Seven of the nine Raider starters had one hit each, including junior Hannah Marsteller (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) going 6-for-8 at the plate with six RBIs and two walks. Marsteller reached base in 8 of 10 plate appearances on the day and finished the tournament 8-for-11 with three walks at the plate over three games.

Piper threw four innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out five.

West Chester first baseman Mike Ferrara was 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs. Luke Cantwell also went deep for the Golden Rams, who pulled away with two runs in the fourth and three in the sixth.

Shippensburg will face the Western Division No. 2 seed Slippery Rock, the host of the PSAC Championships, at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in the first game of the PSAC Championships.

All four of Wednesday’s games will be elimination games, meaning that the winners on Wednesday will advance to a four-team, double elimination bracket beginning Thursday.
