Summer is a time to relax. It is also a time for youngsters to stay active. One way to achieve that is to participate in summer sports camps. Below is a short list of camps and clinics at area colleges:
Penn State – Mont Alto
Nittany Lion Volleyball Summer Skills Camp, Aug. 1-4, 6 to 8 p.m. Open to female volleyball players in grades 7-12. Cost: $100. The session includes advanced individual skills and elite game-like drills. The goal is to give attention to each camper to prepare them for peak club/high school performance as well as preparation for collegiate competition. Participants will split into intermediate and advanced groups based on their experience level. Register by July 25. Women’s Volleyball Setter Clinic, Aug. 6, 9 a.m. to noon, Open to students entering grades 9-12. Cost: $30 (includes free T-shirt, application fee waived for rising seniors; Register here. Wilson College
Does your child love horses? Try the Wilson College Pony Up Day Camp, July 25-29 and Aug. 8-12. Open to ages 5-8 (must have finished kindergarten) Cost: $250 per session (a $20 second child or multiple session discount is available.) The camp is geared to teach young children to respect and love horses. Children will learn to groom, lead, feed and care for a horse. The child will ride each day and play games on horseback to enhance riding skills. Before and aftercare is available: 7:30 a.m. until camp starts at noon-1 p.m. at an additional rate of $100 per session.
Wilson College Horse’n Around Day Camp, July 18-22 and Aug. 1-5. Open to ages 8-15. Cost: $350 per session (A $20 second child or multiple session discount is available). The camp is designed to take students with very little or no experience and begin to prepare them for independence on horseback. Children will be grouped according to experience level and will begin to learn what is involved in owning a horse of their own. Students will participate in at least one mounted lesson per day. They will be involved with the horses or horse activities for the majority of the time, even when not mounted. Mount St. Mary’s University
Youth Baseball Camp, June 20-23, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Ages 6-12. Cost: $350, extended day option of $150/week, $25 local youth league discount; Mount St. Mary’s University, E.T. Straw Family Stadium, 16251 Jim Phelan Way, Emmitsburg, Maryland. Register by June 19. Campers will be placed into groups based on age and/or playing experience. This camp will provide basic instruction in all areas of baseball, building up to daily game competitions.
The Institute
Wee Wonders Nature Series for Preschoolers, Tuesdays, June 7, 14, 21, 28, 10-11:15 a.m. at Pine Hill Recreation Area, Waynesboro. Taught by Institute educators, age=appropriate program activities make learning fun, and include exploring the outdoors, hikes, nature stories, rhymes, finger plays, nature games and puppets. Children must be accompanied by a parent. For kids ages 2 ½ through 5. Pre-registration for full series required. EXPLORE! Programs are designed for kids in grades K through 5, June 23 and 30, July 7, 14, 21 and 28, 9:30 to 11 a.m., Pine Hill Recreation Area, Waynesboro. All program activities are outside and are taught by Institute educators. Each program includes educational activities to the season. Themes: Summer Fun and Fort Building (June 23), Fairy Houses (June 30), Nature Journaling (July 7). Themes for the remaining dates will be announced. Single session: $7 institute members/$9 general public.
Other camps:
WYSA Soccer Camp, July 25-28, 9 to 11:30 a.m. with makeup day July 29, if needed. Boys and girls ages 7-14 (no exceptions on age) who have at least one season of soccer experience and are ready to work on skill to improve their play. Bob Stum Soccer Complex on Country Club Road, Waynesboro. Cost: $65 per player, which will include a camp T-shirt with registration.
