Waynesboro golfers suffer rare defeat

GREENCASTLE – It’s been a while since the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team has lost a match.

In fact, in the previous three seasons (from 2019 to 2021), Waynesboro accumulated a cumulative record of 83-2 (both losses came against Chambersburg). Waynesboro was 25-0 a year ago.

Coach Ryan Henderson’s team coasted to a win in the opening Mid-Penn Colonial Division match of the season at Waynesboro Country Club and entered Monday’s second divisional contest at Greencastle Golf Club with a 6-0 mark.

It was Greencastle-Antrim that handed Waynesboro its first loss in nearly three seasons. The hosts somehow overcame stellar performances by Waynesboro’s top two finishers – Tyler Fortney and Evan Stein, who both finished with identical scores of 77 – thanks in part to some low-80 scores.

“They had several players in the low 80s that made a difference,” Henderson said. “Depth is very important.”

Waynesboro’s next two finishers struggled with scores of 93 and 96.

Greencastle’s Cooper Swam carded an 80 to finish third overall behind Fortney and Stein.

Teammates Zachary Slaybaugh and Levi Tennison both finished with scores of 82, and Jackson Eby turned in an all-important 83 for the fourth and final score for the record that gave G-A the winning team score of 332.

Waynesboro, which maintained its early hold of first place with an 11-1 record after two matches, ended the day with a 339, which was 29 strokes better than third-place Gettysburg.

Northern was fourth, followed by Shippensburg, James Buchanan and Big Spring.
