CARLISLE – The Waynesboro Area High School varsity golf team not only played six other Mid-Penn Colonial Division teams at Eagles Crossing – they also played through a soggy Wednesday afternoon that resulted in a 9-hole match instead of 18 holes.

Waynesboro added six more wins to its win total after finishing eight strokes ahead of second-place Greencastle-Antrim. Waynesboro carded a collective score of 157, while Greencastle came in with a score of 165.

“I’m proud of my top three,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “They came through with solid scores to lead the way. Ryan (Shaffer’s) 45 helped to seal the deal and get the win.”

Waynesboro had three golfers finish in the top five, led by Evan Stein with a 36. Stein tied Greencastle’s Ben Irr for medalist honors with identical scores of 36. Tyler Fortney was third at 37. Kellan Smith tied Greencastle’s Levi Tennison for fourth place with a 39.

Shaffer’s 45 was the team’s fourth score for the record.

Big Spring, the host team, finished third, followed by Shippensburg, Gettysburg, Northern and James Buchanan.

The win gives Waynesboro a 23-1 record, with the only loss coming against the Blue Devils. Greencastle enters the next match with a 20-4 record and will need Waynesboro to fall flat down the stretch to have a chance to win the division.

“This puts us in a strong position to finish on top,” said Henderson. “If we can keep this up, we might just win another Colonial Division title.”

Wednesday’s match sets up an interesting stretch of three matches to end the regular season. Shippensburg will host the next match on Monday at Chambersburg Country Club. After that, the scene shifts to Gettysburg National Golf Club on Wednesday, Sept. 14 and then at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg on Monday, Sept. 19.

Starting times for all matches is 2 p.m.

James Buchanan hosted the third divisional match on Aug. 30 at Great Cove Golf Club, won by Waynesboro with a score of 330. Greencastle was five strokes behind with 335.

Fortney bested the field with a 75. Smith carded an 82, followed by Stein at 83 and Shaffer with a 90.
