SNIFF NOTES: Shop and help

CVAS has a real gem that helps our animals – our thrift store. The Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter Thrift Store is at 66 South Main Street in Chambersburg.

Anyone who shops at or donates to our store will be directly affecting homeless animals in the shelter.

You can find almost anything you can imagine at our store – from clothes to furniture to kitchenware to kids’ toys. There are treasure galore.

Some of the coolest clothes I own actually came from our thrift store. Jeans for $3. Can you believe it? Three dollars! And they’re perfectly awesome jeans. I have shirts that I still get comments on and when people ask where I got it and I tell them our thrift store, they’re amazed.

We get clothing donated with the tag still on – it’s never been worn! And we sell it for way, way below the ticketed price.

Our store is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While you’re there, make sure to say hello to some of the hardest working employees on the planet. Claudia, the manager at our store, really puts her all into that place to make sure everyone is welcoming and we have a wide variety from which to choose. Tell Claudia I said hello next time you are there. She’s just the sweetest woman.

We also have some amazing volunteers and employees who tirelessly sort donations and help keep the store in tip-top shape. They work to paint and maintain our store so it looks appealing to customers. Sometimes it’s easy to forget it’s a thrift store because of how great it looks inside!

The best part about our thrift store is it directly helps the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. The monetary income from our store gives us a relatively consistent source of revenue to maintain the care for the animals in our kennels. Getting a bargain and helping animals at the same time. I can’t think of a better combination.

So, if you’re cleaning out the house because school has started (and you finally have time!) or have some items to drop off, please do so during business hours. Your help allows us to help the animals in our kennels and that means so much to all of us.

We do ask that donations be in above-average condition and in good working order and we don’t accept food.

I also know they always need help at our thrift store, particularly with furniture pickups. If you or anyone you know would like to donate some time and back muscles to a really worthy cause, please contact the store. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer to help sort or stock or keep the store clean would most certainly be welcomed with open arms. It would be a great way for folks who are retired to set their own hours while helping four-legged animals.

We are also looking for a clerk for the store and that’s a paid position. If you’d like to make a little extra cash and know that you’re helping animals, please take a minute and stop by our thrift store to talk about the sales clerk position. I’ve known a number of people over the years who absolutely love animals, but have a hard time coming into the shelter because they can’t adopt. Working at our thrift store would be an amazing way to do that and not have to see all those furry faces that you can’t take home.

For more information on the CVAS Thrift Store, check out their Facebook page or www.cvas-pets.org or call (717) 261-1996.

Who isn’t looking for a bargain, especially in this economy? I know I always am. One great place to find deals is at the CVAS Thrift Store. Make a plan to stop by soon!
