In a Mid-Penn Colonial Division golf meet that featured a first, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity team shifted into high gear and earned its fourth consecutive division title on Monday at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg.

It hasn’t mattered what course Waynesboro played on. The top four scorers were better than every other team, with the exception of the second meet played at Greencastle Golf Club. In fact, that was Waynesboro’s only loss of the season. Head coach Ryan Henderson’s team finished with a record of 41-1.

Waynesboro’s Evan Stein, who has been a model of consistency during the season, finished the meet with a personal best score of 70.

“Evan was a star of the day with a one-under par 70 that led the team to victory,” said Henderson of his number one golfer. “Tyler (Fortney) shot 72 and also played very well. Kellan Smith and Ryan Shaffer rounded out the top four counting scores.”

Smith carded a 77, which greatly helped Waynesboro come into the clubhouse with a team-best score of 311.

Greencastle finished second with 327, followed by Northern York, Shippensburg, Gettysburg, Big Spring and James Buchanan.

Big Spring’s Josh Motter shot 75, while Greencastle-Antrim’s Jackson Eby tied for fourth overall with Waynesboro’s Smith with 77.

For the second year in a row, Waynesboro qualified for the Mid-Penn Conference Championship as a team.

“We are looking forward to postseason play,” Henderson said.

The postseason gets underway on Sept. 27 with the MPC Championship at Dauphin Highlands Golf Course in Harrisburg.

Evan Stein, Tyler Fortney Kellan Smith, Andrew Soffe and Ryan Shaffer will represent Waynesboro.

The District 3-AAA boys and girls golf tournaments will take place on Oct. 7 and 8 at Briarwood East Golf Course in York.
