Franklin County MPO Seeks Public Input On Proposed Transportation Plan

CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Metropolitan Planning Organization (FCMPO) is asking for the public’s feedback on its 2045 Franklin County Long-Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). A draft of the plan, which outlines the strategic direction for Franklin County’s transportation priorities for the next 20 years, is available for review from Nov. 21 through Dec. 21 online at http://bit.ly/3i1xAHs or by visiting the Franklin County Planning Department at 272 N. Second St., Chambersburg.

Residents and stakeholders also have the opportunity to discuss the draft LRTP during a public open house, set for 3:30-4:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Franklin County Administration Building, 272 N. Second St., Chambersburg.

“The FCMPO wants to engage everyone who uses our transportation system – business owners, senior citizens, students, workers and tourists – during this 30-day public comment period,” said Steve Thomas, director of the Franklin County Planning Department. “Gathering public feedback is an important step in finalizing the LRTP and will help shape the FCMPO’s transportation goals and objectives for the next 20 years and beyond. With public comment, we can finalize the policies and projects we need to improve Franklin County’s mobility and economic development potential.”

The FCMPO, which serves as the decision-making body for Franklin County’s transportation projects and programs that use federal funding, is leading the update of the transportation plan, in cooperation with PennDOT and with technical consulting assistance from Michael Baker International, Inc. An advisory committee consisting of representatives of transportation agencies and interests across Franklin County is guiding the LRTP project. When completed, the LRTP will also serve as the transportation element of the Franklin County Comprehensive Plan, Imagine Franklin 2035, and will outline specific transportation priorities to help the county plan for the future.

“This process is a county-wide conversation and an important opportunity for those who live and work within the county to discuss how we want to address transportation and traffic issues over the long-term,” said Thomas. “We all have a stake in those decisions, for our own future and economic competitiveness.”

For more information on the LRTP, contact the Franklin County Planning Department at  planning@franklincountypa.gov or 717-261-3855.
