WAYNESBORO – Cameron Witte is quite a versatile athlete. The quintessential Waynesboro Area Senior High School senior plays soccer, basketball and softball – and she excels at each of them.

Recently, the centerfielder for the Maidens committed to attend Millersville University where she will play softball.

“The campus felt like home,” said Witte, who is preparing for the 2022-23 hoops season and then moving on to open gym and softball. “When I walked in I loved the feel. When I went in and met the players, it already felt like I was on the team.”

Millersville, coached by Jen Probst, competes in NCAA Division II and is a member of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Witte, who has played for three different travel teams (The Phoenix, The Hearbreakers and Polar Elite) is more than a known commodity in the high school game. In addition to being adept at chasing down fly balls and using her speed both in the field and on the bases, she was a big threat at the plate. Witte, who batted .344, had 21 hits in 74 at bats. Of those hits, 13 were for extra bases – seven home runs, three triples and two doubles.

Witte, a four-year varsity player for the Maidens, scored 22 runs and drove in 19.

“I have coached Cam since WAGS, and it has been a pleasure watching her grow,” said Waynesboro head coach Steven McElroy. “Cam is a solid teammate, outgoing leader and a pleasure to have in the dugout. Mid-season last year we switched Cam to outfield, and she has never looked back.”

Witte is looking forward to the challenges of higher education and a higher level of competition.

“My goals are to work as hard as I can through college, get my degree and also to have the best four years of softball I can,” Witte said. “I’m looking forward to all the memories, and the people I’m going to meet.”

While there might be some additional pressure on Witte to perform to an even higher standard now that she has secured her place on a collegiate team, Witte isn’t overwhelmed by it. She’s going to do what she knows she can and try to help Waynesboro return to the District 3 playoffs.

After that, it’s on to Millersville University and bigger challenges.

“At the college level it’s really figuring out how to get to a breaking ball, how you can get ahead of a pitcher in the count,” Witte said. “I did have a good high school season hitting, but I know once you get to college, it’s a whole different level, and you need to have really good timing and see the ball move.”
