BLUE RIDGE SUMMIT- The Blue Ridge Summit Free Library will hold its annual Yuletide Celebration from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, on the library grounds. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Activities during the family-friendly event include fire truck rides by the Blue Ridge Summit Volunteer Fire Company; an appearance by Santa, who will hand out candy canes; and a children’s craft to create a bird feeder to take home.
“In addition, we’ll have live music by Rich Fehle, and holiday goodies including cookies, s’mores and hot or cold cider,” said Paul Pinkerton, president of the library’s board.
The library, which celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, will be open during the event and decorated for Christmas.
“A special highlight is a tree decorated with Brandywine Critters ornaments, created by Blue Ridge Summit resident, the late Roberta (Bert) Domenick,” Pinkerton said. “Mrs. Domenick helped begin the ‘Critters Workshop’ program at the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pa., and the whimsical ornaments are still a big attraction at that museum.”
Brandywine Critter ornaments are made of natural materials such as seeds, pods, grasses and leaves. Some of them have been displayed on a Christmas tree in the White House. The ornaments featured on the library’s tree are from Domenick’s personal collection.
There will be a memorial tree lighting in memory of Janie Sharpe, long-time supporter of the library well remembered for providing funnel cakes at the annual Ice Cream Social and Book Sale every summer.
Just in time for the holidays, the Blue Ridge Summit Stitchers will draw the winner for their annual quilt raffle.
In addition, the highest bidder in an ongoing silent auction will take home a unique piece of art—a large hand saw painted by local artist Steve Burdette with a depiction of the original train station. The saw was donated by Bill Coyle.
The painted saw is on display at the library. Bids are accepted at the library, via email to brsmountainboard@gmail.com or blueridgesummitfreelibrary@gmail.com, or via Facebook messages. Additional bids will be accepted during the yuletide event until 6:00 p.m.
To commemorate the library’s centennial, ceramic mugs in a variety of glaze colors and featuring a library design will be offered for sale. The mugs were created by local potter Corey Shultz of Gettysburg. Limited edition T-shirts for sale feature a special 100th anniversary logo. Sweatshirts are also for sale.
