HANOVER – The Waynesboro varsity wrestling team made the trip to southwestern York County on Tuesday, Dec. 21 to face the South Western Mustangs from the York-Adams League.

The Mid-Penn Conference Indians returned back to Franklin County with a 54-22 non-conference victory after winning eight out of 13 contested matches.

The meet began at 132 pounds, and Waynesboro went right to work to take control of things. The Tribe came out of the gates and won the first six bouts, beginning with Jayden Rooney’s first-period fall at 132 pounds. Rooney pinned South Western’s Aydan Livelsberger in 1:27.

At 138 pounds, Waynesboro’s Garrett Price won by forfeit. Robert Howard followed at 145 pounds with another first-period pin. Howard worked for the pin in 1:01.

Waynesboro’s Titus Mong made it four pins in the meet with a fall in 1:42 at 172 pounds to up the score to 36-0.

South Western notched its first points in the 189-pound bout with a fall in 1:32.

But Waynesboro clinched the meet victory in the next match when Caden Shockey pinned John Felipe in 1:14 to give the Indians a 42-6 lead.

Corty Myers won by forfeit at 285, and after South Western picked up a forfeit at 106 and a pin at 113, Waynesboro registered its final win of the night when Steven Howard earned the Fastest Pin award for a fall in 1:04 at 120 pounds.

Waynesboro competed in the Carlisle Classic last weekend hosted by Carlisle High School.

Rooney placed fourth in the 133-pound weight class. The sophomore advanced to the championship semifinal match before losing. Rooney won his consolation semifinal by the score of 7-2 and lost in the consolation finals 5-1 by medical forfeit.

Lowans placed fifth at 152 pounds as he dropped into the consolation bracket with a championship quarterfinal loss. He won his first two consy bouts, the first by major decision (14-1) and the next by technical fall (15-0 in 3:47). He lost in the consolation semis and won his fifth-place match by technical fall (22-4 in 5:00).

Waynesboro was scheduled to host James Buchanan on Dec. 9 but the contest was postponed due to wintry weather. The match was rescheduled for Feb. 1.
