ELIZABETHTOWN – The Waynesboro varsity wrestling team competed in the Grizzly Duals on Saturday at Elizabethtown High School and went 4-1 in the five contests.

The Indians defeated Muhlenberg (40-30), York Suburban (45-28), Red Land (33-29) and Palmyra (37-33). Waynesboro lost to Elizabethtown (45-24).

WAYNESBORO 40, MUHLENBERG 30

Waynesboro forfeited the 107-pound match, as it has done all season.

The forfeit meant that the pressure was on the rest of the team to produce points since a forfeit is worth the same as a pin – six points.

Muhlenberg didn’t need any forfeits in the next three matches, as the Muhls won by fall at 114 pounds and 121 pounds and regular decision at 127 to build a 21-0 lead.

It was Waynesboro’s turn to put a run together, and the Tribe did just that. Jayden Rooney (133) won by injury default in the second period. Garrett Price (139) won by fall in 1:12; Calvin Myers followed with a 30-second pin at 145 pounds ad Garrett Lowans won by major decision, 11-3, in the 152-pound bout to give the Indians a 22-21 lead.

The lead grew to 34-21 after pins by Clayton Costella (160) and Titus Mong (172). Both falls came in the first period and Mong’s victory clinched the team win.

WAYNESBORO 45, YORK SUBURBAN 28

York Suburban took a quick 6-0 lead with a pin in the 114-pound match.

Waynesboro tied it when Steven Howard won by fall in 1:48. Chance Atkinson received a forfeit at 127 pounds.

York Suburban cut the deficit to 12-9 with a decision at 133, but Waynesboro’s Garrett Price won by fall in 41 seconds to up the lead to 18-9.

It was 18-12 when the Indians won the next three bouts. Lowans garnered a second-period fall at 152. Costella won by a 7-2 decision at 160 and Mong pinned his opponent in 45 seconds to make the score 33-12.

Isaac Bautista (215) and Cort Myers (285) both won by fall to close out the scoring for Waynesboro.

ELIZABETHTOWN 45, WAYNESBORO 24

Elizabethtown led 11-0 when Rooney won by fall in 1:10 at 133 pounds.

The hosts won three straight matches to take a 21-6 lead.

Waynesboro’s other winners were Mong (pin), Caden Shockey (forfeit) and Myers (pin).

WAYNESBORO 33, RED LAND 29

Steven Howard turned in the most crucial win of the contest when he pinned his opponent in 3:33 to vault the Indians past the Patriots 33-29 (Red Land had two team points deducted). Howard and Corbin Hutchison traded takedowns in the first period. In the second period, Howard scored on a takedown, and Hutchison got two points to tie the bout on a reversal. Then, Howard parlayed a reversal into a pin near the end of the second period.

Turning in wins for Waynesboro were Rooney (fall), Price (fall), Calvin Myers (fall), Lowans (8-3 decision), Mong (5-2 decision) and Shockey (4-1 decision).

WAYNESBORO 37, PALMLYRA 33

In another close contest, this one didn’t come down to the final match.

Red Land won the final four matches, including three by fall and the other by forfeit, but the Indians led 37-9 leading up to the strange finish.

Rooney started things off with a 19-8 major decision at 133. Price made it 10-0 with a fall in 38 seconds. Calvin Myers won by decision (8-2) to make it 13-0.

It was 13-3 when Costella won by fall in 3:22. Mong then won by forfeit, and after Palmyra won by pin in the 189-pound match, Waynesboro’s Isaac Bautista pinned his opponent in three minutes and Cort Myers won by forfeit to make it 37-9. Myers clinched the team win with his win by forfeit.

Waynesboro will have another busy week, starting on Tuesday with a dual meet at Chambersburg. Then, the Indians will travel to Mercersburg to take on James Buchanan in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division.

Waynesboro will close out the week by competing in another duals event, this time hosted by Central Dauphin. In addition to Waynesboro and CD, four other teams (Freedom, Manheim Township, Northern and Pittston) will participate.
