Waynesboro finishes 2-1 at Denver Duals

DENVER – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity wrestling team won two out of three meets at Saturday’s Denver Duals hosted by Cocalico High School.

The Indians defeated Central Bucks West 55-12 and Governor Mifflin 48-22. Waynesboro lost to Red Lion 43-19.

The Indians fell behind early against Governor Mifflin after losing by major decision at 141 pounds.

But Waynesboro reeled off six straight wins, including three pins, to take control of the meet 30-4.

Calvin Myers won by fall in 2:24 in the 147-pound bout. Luke Lehr than won by pin in 3:58 and Garrett Lowans was awarded a win by forfeit. Titus Mong worked for a 7-5 decision at 174 pounds, and Kaden Shockey decisioned his opponent 6-2 at 191 pounds.

Brady Mansfield extended the lead to 30-4 with a third-period fall at 217 pounds.

The Mustangs picked up a pair of wins at 104 (forfeit) and 114 (fall).

Waynesboro then won the next three bouts by pin before Mifflin won the finale by fall.

Steven Howard pinned his opponent in the first period at 121 pounds. Chance Atkinson secured a fall in the second period, and Rooney pinned his opponent in the first period.

Waynesboro also trailed at the outset against Central Bucks West after giving up a pin at 127 pounds but won 12 of the next 13 matches.

Rooney started a run of nine straight wins when he registered a fall in 1:06 in the 133-pound bout.

Garrett Price turned his opponent to his back in just 37 seconds at 139 pounds, and Myers won by fall in 1:06 at 145 pounds. Lehr followed suit with a second-period pin at 152 pounds, followed by a 15-2 major decision by Lowans at 160 pounds to give the Indians a 28-6 lead.

The lead kept growing. Mong recorded a second-period fall at 172 pounds, followed by a first-period pin by Mansfield and a second-period fall by Shockey at 215.

Steven Howard notched a 6-0 win in the final bout of the contest.

The Indians stubbed their proverbial toes in their contest against Red Lion en route to a 24-point

setback.

Jayden Rooney gave Waynesboro a 4-0 lead when he notched a 10-2 major decision in the 133-pound match.

The Lions from York County won back-to-back bouts by decision to take a 6-3 lead.

The lead was short-lived as Garrett Lowans gutted out a 5-3 decision in the 152-pound bout that gave Waynesboro a 7-6 advantage.

Mong gave the Indians their last lead at 13-10 after he recorded a pin in only 34 seconds in the 171-pound bout.

Red Lion won the next five matches to open up a 37-13 lead before Waynesboro’s Steven Robinson was awarded a win by forfeit for the Tribe’s final points.

Waynesboro hosts West Perry on Thursday on Senior Night.
