ENOLA – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School girls’ swim team has already enjoyed an historic season, and the Maidens made it even more historic by winning their division in just the first season of sanctioned competition.
On Tuesday afternoon, Waynesboro made the trip to East Pennsboro High School needing a win to clinch the Mid-Penn Colonial Division championship. The Maidens came away with a 103-47 win over the Panthers and added a 104-50 win over Halifax to complete the sweep of the tri-meet.
Waynesboro improved to 10-0 with the wins with a dual meet against Cedar Cliff on the schedule this Thursday.
Waynesboro won the boys’ meet against East Pennsboro, 107-35.
The Maidens won the 200 yard medley relay by 10 seconds as the team of Emma Swanson, Belle Hess, Eve Phillips and Brenna Naddeo finished with a time of 2:00.53.
Phillips won the 200 freestyle in 2:05.39, and after East Pennsboro won the 200 individual medley, Waynesboro’s Mya Beck won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.89 seconds. Phillips added a 100 butterfly win to her ledger (59.01), and Beck won the 100 freestyle (58.03).
Maddy Stoops followed with a win in the 500 freestyle in 5:54.90.
The Maidens picked up another relay win, outlasting East Pennsboro in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:49.31 (Hess, Naddeo, Beck and Swanson).
Naddeo then won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.45.
Waynesboro closed out the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Stoops, Beck, Phillips and Naddeo winning with a time of 3:56.85.
In the boys’ meet, Waynesboro’s individual winners were Kyle Swanson (200 freestyle, 2:42.80), JB Bonner (200 IM, 2:16.14), Aiden Hess (100 butterfly, 1:04.70), Brenner McIlquham (100 freestyle, 52.19), Gabe Blake (100 backstroke, 1:03.89) and Owen Shockey (100 breaststroke, 1:18.61).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Waynesboro 78, Shippensburg 39
At Shippensburg, the Waynesboro varsity boys’ basketball team scored early and often enroute to a 78-39 victory against Shippensburg on Tuesday in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game.
The Indians entered the contest having already clinched the division championship and are now playing for an undefeated league season. Waynesboro improved to 18-1 overall and 13-0 in the division with one more league game to play (at home against Greencastle-Antrim on Friday).
Waynesboro led 23-13 after the first quarter and took a 46-25 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Indians continued to pull away in the second half, outscoring the Greyhounds 21-10 in the third period to take a 67-35 lead into the final quarter of play.
Senior Ryan Shaffer led the Indians scoring attack with 22 points. Fellow senior Tanyon Shaull followed with 15 points, while senior Michael Young added 12 points.
Jaylon Bean had nine points and five assists, while Cooper Hough tallied seven points and dished out seven assists.
