At Enola, the Waynesboro varsity boys’ basketball team lost 62-48 to State College in a Mid-Penn Conference tournament semifinal game played at East Pennsboro High School on Tuesday night.
The Indians, champions of the Mid-Penn Colonial Division, faced off against the Little Lions, winners of the Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division.
Waynesboro kept it close until the third quarter when State College outscored the Tribe (19-4) 21-9 to take a 42-26 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Ryan Shaffer paced the offense with 14 points. Jaylon Bean had 10 points and Tanyon Shaull finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds.
State College outrebounded Waynesboro 33-20. The Little Lions attempted 26 three-point field goals and made nine of them. The Indians connected on six three-pointers, including two each by Shaffer and Michael Young.
Shaffer and Cooper Hough each recorded four assists.
It was Waynesboro’s third straight loss to a Class 6A team, the same classification that the Indians are members of. Waynesboro lost to Carlisle last Tuesday and Chambersburg on Thursday in the final game of the regular season.
The game did not reflect in the final District 3 power rating. The deadline for rankings is Feb. 15. Barring any changes in the final rankings, Waynesboro will be the fifth-ranked team in 6A behind top-seed Reading (21-0), Cumberland Valley (19-3), Hempfield (19-2) and William Penn (18-4).
The top four teams get byes, and the remaining higher seeded teams will host games in the first round. Waynesboro would play Red Lion (11-11), a member of the York-Adams League on Tuesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
The winner advances to the quarterfinals at the fourth seed. The loser will play in the consolation bracket at the site of the higher-seeded team and can still move on to the PIAA tournament with a seventh-place finish or higher. The winner of that consolation game will play for a fifth seed at states against the winner of Chambersburg-Carlisle, while the loser will play for the seventh seed.
The District 3 boys and girls basketball brackets will be announced Thursday morning.
SWIMMING
Waynesboro competes in Mid-Penn Conference Chamionships
The Waynesboro boys’ and girls’ swim teams competed at the 2023 Mid-Penn Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at the Cumberland Valley High School natatorium on Feb. 10 and 11.
Both teams combined to place in the top 16 in 12 events.
Eve Phillips was the highest finisher for Waynesboro as she placed second in the girls’ 100-meter freestyle with a time of 54.58. Phillips finished fourth in the 100 butterfly in 59.01.
The girls’ 200 freestyle relay consisting of Mya Beck, Emma Swanson, Brenna Naddeo and Phillips finished fourth (1:41.31).
Beck was ninth in the 100 freestyle at 56.40 and finished 10th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.61. Naddeo was 15th in the 50 free and placed 14th in the 100 freestyle.
The girls 200 medley relay team of Ashlynn Carbaugh, Belle Hess, Maddy Stoops and Addi Callaway finished 16th.
For the boys, Brenner McIlquham finished 12th in the 50 freestyle.
The 200 freestyle relay team of JB Bonner, Gabe Blake, Aiden Hess and McIlquham placed ninth, while Bonner, Blake, Hess and McIlquham combined to finish 12th in the 400 freestyle relay.
Next up for swimmers is the District 3 championships set for March 3 and 4 at Cumberland Valley High School.
