WAYNE HEIGHTS–Grocery shoppers in the Waynesboro area may soon have a new outlet to peruse.

Plans for an Aldi store in the Wayne Heights Mall will be presented to the Washington Township Planning Committee at its meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 13, at the township offices at 13013 Welty Road.

“We received the plans last week – Franklin County reviewed it and Washington Township Municipal Authority is looking at it,” according to Chad Reichard, assistant zoning officer and planner for Washington Township.

Plans call for renovations to storefronts from Rite Aid, which will remain in place, east to Dollar Tree. “There will be a bump-out so that the front of Aldi will be flush with Dollar Tree,” Reichard said.

The planning committee will make recommendations to Washington Township supervisors, he added. “We have worked with Aldi on minor changes. If the plans are approved, Aldi will then apply for construction permits,” he said.

“We’re very pleased to see this new business, providing more shopping opportunities for residents of Washington Township and Waynesboro. It’s an all-around good thing and we’re excited to have them,” noted Reichard.

The guiding principle of Aldi for the last 40 years is “great quality should come with everyday low prices,” according to its website. Aldi officials could not be reached for comment.

In 1961, the Albrecht Family founded the world’s first discount grocery store in Germany. In 1976, the first ALDI store was opened in Iowa. Today, with ALDI headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, there are more than 2,000 stores across 36 states with over 25,000 employees.
