WAYNESBORO–Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary has awarded six Health Career Scholarships to high school seniors from Waynesboro Area Senior High School and Greencastle-Antrim High School and one Laboratory Memorial Scholarship to an employee at WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital.
The students were selected on the basis of their educational intent, scholastic achievement, general character, service activities and need for financial assistance. The Health Career scholarships will be split between the fall and spring semesters of their freshman year.
Recipients include:
Madison N. Henson (G-AHS), daughter of George Henson and Nicole Henson, will attend University of Pittsburgh as a student in its Emergency Medicine program. She will receive The Robert Lawn Honorary Health Career Scholarship in the amount of $8,000.
Anna L. Hoffman (WASHS), daughter of Tom and Jen Hoffman, will attend Elizabethtown College in its Occupational Therapy program. She will receive a $6,000 Health Career scholarship.
Alaina M. Warner (WASHS), daughter of Mike and Jennifer Warner, will attend West Virginia University in its Nursing/Nurse Practitioner program. She will receive a $6,000 Health Career Scholarship.
Abigail G. Guthrie (G-AHS), daughter of Frank and Nan Guthrie, will attend West Virginia University in its Exercise Physiology program. She will receive a $4,000 Health Career scholarship.
Carter A. Reid (G-AHS), son of Kevin and Raeann Reid, will attend Messiah University in its Exercise Science program. He will receive The Pamela Mowrey Honorary Health Career Scholarship in the amount of $3,000.
Darren M. Kline (G-AHS), son of David and Michelle Kline, will attend Misericordia University in its Physician Assistant – Neurology program. He will receive a $3,000 Health Career Scholarship.
The auxiliary has awarded $239,200 to 208 graduating seniors from Waynesboro Area and Greencastle-Antrim school districts in the past 50 years.
The Laboratory Memorial Scholarship, in memory of employees Mindy S. Wagaman and Marsha Smith at WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital, is for students enrolled in a program leading to certification as a phlebotomist, medical laboratory technician or medical technologist. A total of $10,500 has been awarded to nine applicants since 2010.
Gayle Sullivan, an employee in the laboratory at WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital, is the recipient of the Laboratory Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000. She is attending the University of Cincinnati in their medical technologist program and will graduate in May 2024.
The Pearle E. Warren Nursing Scholarship, through The Warren Trust Fund, is made possible through a bequest of Pearle E. Warren, a nursing assistant and home health care aide who had a love of nursing, to assist WellSpan Waynesboro Hospital employees in their second year or beyond of an accredited nursing program. The Warren Trust Fund has awarded a total of $40,000 to 20 hospital employees since 2003. There were no applicants this year.
Members of the scholarship committee are Jill Kessler, Sherry Newcomer, Alice Noll and Ruth Strausbaugh.
Applications for 2024 scholarships will be available in high school guidance offices, the hospital’s Volunteer Office, and on their websites in January 2024.
