WAYNESBORO – April is an unpredictable month when it comes to weather around southcentral Pennsylvania.
But not on Tuesday.
The climate couldn’t have been more pleasant, and the outcome of the boys and girls track and field meets against visiting Gettysburg added to the warmth and sunshine. The Indians turned away the Warriors 87-63, and the Maidens defeated the Lady Warriors 90-60 at the Charles A. “Rip” Engle Sports Complex.
Despite losing two out of three relays in both meets, thus giving away 10 points, Waynesboro got five points back in the 1600-meter relay. For the boys, it was Michael Calo, Chance Atkinson, Jake Brook and Nikolas Sanders capping the meet with a time of 3:48.3.
On the girls’ side, Gracie French, Sierra Rae, Isabella Ruefle and True Benchoff racing a lap apiece and finishing with a time of 4:18.6.
Earlier in the meet, Waynesboro’s Joey Jacobs led the 1600-meter run from start to finish and completed four laps in a time of 4:40. The Indians picked up nine points in that event, as teammates Noah Bockstie and William Campbell finishing second and third, respectively.
Waynesboro also swept the top three places in the 400 with Calo winning with a time of 54.7 seconds and Atkinson and Sanders ending up in second and third, respectively.
Jacobs and Bockstie placed first and second in the 3200, with Jacobs garnering his second top finish in a time of 10:37 in the eight-lap event. Bockstie was second.
Jacobs added a third top finish when he bested the field in the 800 with a time of 2:07.4. Julian Mencia was second.
Jaylon Bean won the 110-meter hurdles in 16.3 seconds, and teammate Owen Shockey, who won the 300 hurdles (44.8), was the runner up.
In the weight events, Tanyon Shuall was victorious in the javelin throw with a distance of 142-feet, 6 inches. The Tribe picked up another one-two finish when Williams finished behind Shaull at 140-1.
Shaull won the discus throw (120-0), and Bean won the triple jump (43-10). Bean also added a third win when he won the 200-meter dash in 23.1 seconds.
Grant Thompson gave Waynesboro its 12th first-place finish (out of 18 events) with a first in the high jump (5-10).
Meanwhile, the Maidens won 10 events, had 10 seconds and 10 thirds to accumulate all of their points.
Benchoff, who contributed to the 1600 relay, added top finishes in the 100 hurdles (16.9) and the 300 hurdles (48.0). Olivia Dingzon joined Benchoff in the Two-Win club with top finishes in “the valley” Dingzon won the discus throw (90-10) and javelin throw (86-0) and finished third in the shot put (28-8).
Ana Enfusse won the triple jump (30-4). Jada Dockmon won the high jump (4-9) and was second in the pole vault behind teammate Jada Creager (9-0).
The Waynesboro boys team improved its dual meet record to 3-0. The Indians opened the season on March 28 with a 95-54 win over Boiling Springs. Waynesboro defeated Big Spring on April 4 by the score of 111-38.
The Maidens also are 3-0, having won meets against Boiling Springs (118-32) and Big Spring (118-32). The next dual meet is Tuesday, April 18 at Shippensburg.
