Goats hired to maintain land

CHAMBERSBURG–Chambersburg Town Council has hired FlockWorks of Orrstown, to provide guided goat grazing to clear overgrown land along the banks of the Conococheague Creek adjacent to the Rail Trail between West King Street and Commerce Street for a cost not to exceed $5,651.58.

The Borough Storm Sewer Utility will fund this project along with the Chambersburg Rail Trail Stormwater Management Project, which will be completed later this year with support from a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Trust.

Starting in early May 2023, FlockWorks will fence and sign areas along the banks of the Conococheague Creek where goats will graze, starting south of Commerce Street and then moving towards West King Street. FlockWorks will be responsible for maintaining and monitoring the areas where goats graze. Please see below goat rules provided by FlockWorks. You can learn more about FlockWorks by visiting their website at https://www.flockworks.us/.

  • Keep dogs away! The fence is ELECTRIC and the goats need to feel safe!
  • Do not allow any dogs, even lap-sized dogs, to chase the goats or even patrol the fence.
  • Do not feed the goats! Their job is to eat the vegetation in the fenced area.
  • Do not add any plants! Many yard plants are poisonous to goats!
  • Do not touch the fence! Again, ELECTRIC fence. Painful!
  • Know that the area is monitored, using more than one method. You may see a camera or two, but there is more than meets the eye.

Town Council approved FlockWorks goat grazing as an effective way to clear overgrown land and invasive vegetation along the Conococheague Creek and to provide an interesting and educational viewing experience for people that use the Rail Trail. As part of the proposed improvements, the Borough plans to re-vegetate and re-plant trees along the banks of the Conococheague Creek.
