CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed May to be Older Americans Month in Franklin County. In doing so, the commissioners are encouraging residents to celebrate older citizens, to help create a community that welcomes these older Americans, and to encourage older residents to pave their own paths as they age.

May 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of Older Americans Month in the U.S. Over 55.8 million Americans – 16.8% of the U.S. population – are over the age of 65. Closer to home, one in every five Franklin County residents are at least 65 years old.

“Our senior citizens are valuable members of our community. It’s important that everyone recognizes their contributions and appreciates their wisdom and lived experiences,” said Franklin County Commissioner Dave Keller. “The commissioners are honored to do our part to support the wellbeing of our seniors, and we encourage our residents, businesses and other stakeholders to do their part to show these individuals the respect they deserve.”

Locally, the Franklin County Area Agency on Aging provides a planned program of supported services to those 60 years and older, intended to optimize independence, promote consumer choice and enhance quality of life.
