GETTYSBURG – The Mid-Penn Colonial Division held its first divisional meet on Tuesday, and already things are getting interesting related to Waynesboro’s recent dominance.

Once the final scores were penciled in, Northern York emerged as the winner. The Polar Bears finished seven strokes better than their Franklin County opponent, carding a collective score of 327.

No one could take away from Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney, who shined brightly by turning in the best overall score of 72 at Gettysburg National Golf Club.

“Tyler got off to a great start once again this season,” said Waynesboro coach Ryan Henderson. “.His even par 72 really kept us in the match today. Andrew Soffe shot 79 which is a great start for him. His game has improved significantly.

Fortney’s score, unfortunately, wasn’t the standard for the rest of the team. Andrew Soffe’s 79 kept the team score low, but the remaining two scorers of record finished with scores of 90 and 93, respectively.

“I’m very proud of Stone Taylor. It was his very first varsity match, as a senior rookie, and his score of 90 was our third best today. I’m glad to see him succeed so early on. Kellan Smith shot 93 to round out our top for counting scores. Unfortunately, that was not enough to get the job done today as we lost by seven shots to Northern. We only beat Shippensburg by one stroke. Things could be tight this season, which is exciting for everyone. We have some work to do.”

Fortney’s score, unfortunately, wasn’t the standard for the rest of the team. Andrew Soffe’s 79 kept the team score low, but the remaining two scorers of record finished with scores of 90 and 93, respectively.

Shippensburg was within a stroke of Waynesboro, which ended the day with a score of 334. The Greyhounds turned in a score of 335 and sets up an intriguing scenario for the season, as three teams could possibly vie for bragging rights.

Garrett White and Logan White finished with identical scores of 78 for Northern. But the difference in the competition was Kyle Miller and Josh Hoover, who carded scores of 85 and 86, respectively.

Shippensburg’s Mason Fogelsonger tied with Soffe for fourth in the individual scoring. The other three scorers all shot in the 80s.

Gettysburg was fourth (361), followed by Greencastle-Antrim (367), Big Spring (389) and James Buchanan (91).

The next league meet is scheduled for Thursday at Greencastle. Tee time at Greencastle Golf Course is 12 p.m.
