Northern York gets first place back

CARLISLE – The back and forth continues between the Waynesboro and Northern York varsity golf teams.

The scene shifted to Eagles Crossing Golf Club, a par-72, 6,475-yard course, in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division hosted by Big Spring. It was another two-team showdown as Waynesboro and Northern faced off with two more league meets to play.

It wasn’t Waynesboro’s day. Head coach Ryan Henderson’s squad shot 16 strokes lower than the previous league competition. Northern also shot a bit lower than its potential but still beat Waynesboro head-to-head 334-343.

Northern broke the first-place tie that stood after Waynesboro won last week’s divisional meet. Northern stands at 28-2. Waynesboro is 27-3.

“We lost by nine shots, just didn’t have our stuff,” Henderson said. “Tyler (Fortney) was the only player who played to his abilities. He shot 74.”

Fortney was the top overall finisher. He shot three strokes better than Northern’s Logan White (77). Northern’s Garrett White was third overall with 81. Teammate Josh Hoover finished in a two-way tie with James Buchanan’s Abram Stock for sixth place with 84.

Waynesboro’s Kellan Smith tied with Greencastle-Antrim’s Camden Eby for eighth with 85.

Waynesboro’s third and fourth scorers were Andrew Soffe (91) and Stone Taylor (93). Meanwhile, Northern’s numbers three and four were Josh Hoover (84) and Kooper Cunningham (92).

The “anything you can do we can do better” interplay between the top two Mid-Penn Colonial Division teams continues next week when teams travel to Chambersburg Country Club on Sept. 12 for the sixth league meet.

“Our next chance is next week to try and knock off Northern and make it a race for the division championship,” Henderson said.

The stakes are high for the local team. In fact, it’s a must-win, because only one meet remains after the next competition – at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg, on Sept. 19.
