York Event Reminds Parents of SIDS Prevention

YORK- The York Bureau of Health and WellSpan Health held an event to remind parents of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) prevention. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants under the age of 1, and it is important for parents to be aware of the risk factors and take steps to reduce the risk.

One of the most important things that parents can do to reduce the risk of SIDS is to put their babies to sleep on their backs. Putting babies to sleep on their stomachs or sides increases the risk of SIDS by up to 10 times.

Parents should also avoid sharing their adult beds with their babies. Sharing a bed with a baby increases the risk of SIDS by 30 times.

The event featured speakers from the York Bureau of Health and WellSpan Health, as well as a mother who lost her baby to SIDS. The speakers shared information about SIDS prevention and answered questions from parents.

“We want to share information so they can make the best decision possible for their babies to keep their babies safe because we don’t want to have Pam Gay coming to talk to your family to try to explain why your baby died unexpectedly,” said WellSpan Neonatologist Dr. Michael Goodstein.

The York Bureau of Health and WellSpan Health encourage parents to learn more about SIDS prevention and to take steps to reduce the risk. More information can be found on the York Bureau of Health website and the WellSpan Health website.
