WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity wrestling team began a grueling three-day stretch with a dual meet against Chambersburg on Wednesday.

The Indians led early, 15-14 but the Trojans, already receiving forfeiture wins at 107 and 114 pounds (that’s 12 team points), won the final seven bouts to win going away 50-18.

“We gave up those points, but we didn’t wrestle hard enough against Chambersburg,” said Waynesboro head coach David Swink. “They came and they out-wrestled us. We were both at the same tournament (Spring Grove Duals) this past weekend, and we were both 1-4. There were a lot of good teams there. I didn’t know if we could beat Chambersburg, but we were hoping it would be a lot closer.”

Action got underway at 133 pounds, and the Trojans picked up the first of five pins when Ashton Romberger pinned Colin Young in 3:12. Romberger scored on takedowns in the first and second periods before getting Young in a pin hold.

Waynesboro’s Jayden Rooney dominated the 139-pound bout. He scored on a takedown and two-point nearfall against Josiah Martinez and then notched the fall in 1:51 to tie the meet at 6.

Chambersburg won the next two matches as Tyler Frey won by technical fall over Calvin Myers (20-4) at 145 pounds. Logan Mickey decisioned Logan Lowans 6-0.

Waynesboro responded with wins in consecutive weight classes (160 and 172) to take a one-point lead.

Clayton Costella nearly matched Rooney’s fall time as he pinned Zethan Sleighter in 1:54. He was leading 4-1 before the fall. Titus Mong won by decision, 6-0 against Noah Valentine.

The tide turned at 189 pounds when Chambersburg’s Jacob Stoner trailed Caden Shockey 8-1 in the second period but after starting in the down position in the third period scored on a reversal and then turned Shockey to his back for the pin in 4:54.

“We lost some matches we needed,” Swink said. “(Shockey) had beaten that kid earlier this fall. To me he ran out of gas. The third period he wasn’t there. He started rolling around and got out of position and on his back. That was a key match there. I think Calvin Myers match versus Tyler Frye hurt us. Tyler beat him last year but we really wanted that to be a closer match.”

Chambersburg’s Aiden Hight (215) and Frank Barmentos (285) won by fall. Back-to-back forfeits at 107 and 114 set up the final bout of the night, won by Waynesboro’s Steven Howard by decision 5-3.

The loss puts Waynesboro’s season record to 1-5. The Indians went 1-4 at the Spring Grove Duals this past Saturday. Waynesboro lost to Boiling Springs 35-27, Northern York 38-33, Spring Grove 33-29 and Hempfield 43-19. The Tribe beat Loyola-Blakefield (Maryland) 39-33.

Waynesboro’s next contest is at Greencastle-Antrim (Thursday). The Indians will compete in the Carlisle Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
