CHAMBERSBURG- Franklin County Career and Technology Center’s Allied Health program recently took their students on a field trip to experience the world of surgery firsthand. At the Whitaker Center for Science & Arts in Harrisburg, they participated in Surgery LIVE, an interactive program that allows participants to observe a live surgery taking place at Hershey Medical Center.

This immersive experience provided students with a unique opportunity to see the inner workings of a surgical team, from the pre-operative preparations to the closing suture. They witnessed the surgeons’ meticulous skills and teamwork in action, gaining valuable insights into the demanding and rewarding field of medicine.

But the learning didn’t stop there. After observing the live surgery, students participated in an extension activity that put their newfound knowledge to the test. They watched an instructional video on intubation, a critical procedure that involves placing a tube in a patient’s airway to facilitate breathing. Then, equipped with stethoscopes and simulated mannequins, they practiced their own intubation skills under the guidance of their instructors.

This hands-on experience allowed students to apply the theoretical knowledge they had learned in the classroom to a practical setting. It also gave them a chance to develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, all of which are essential for success in the medical field.

The Surgery LIVE program at the Whitaker Center is just one of many ways that Franklin County Career and Technology Center is preparing its students for success in the ever-changing healthcare field. By providing students with hands-on learning experiences and exposure to cutting-edge technology, the program is helping to ensure that the next generation of healthcare professionals is well-equipped to meet the challenges of the future.
