Students Experience Aging with Simulation Package

CHAMBERSBURG- Franklin County Career and Tech Medical Assisting students got a unique and valuable lesson in empathy and understanding recently. Thanks to a generous donation from Keystone Health, the program received an “Aging Simulation” package, allowing students to experience the challenges faced by their senior patients firsthand.

The package includes items designed to mimic the age-related physical and sensory changes many older adults encounter. Students donned weighted suits that simulate the decreased muscle strength and joint pain often associated with aging. They also wore special glasses that blur vision and distort sound, giving them a glimpse into the world of diminished sight and hearing.

Orthopedic shoes further hindered their mobility, while other accessories like earplugs and tremors gloves added to the sensory overload. Through this immersive experience, the students gained a deeper appreciation for the difficulties their future patients might face in performing daily tasks.

The Aging Simulation package not only fosters empathy but also equips students with practical skills needed to effectively care for the elderly. By understanding the physical and sensory changes associated with aging, they can better anticipate their patients’ needs and provide appropriate support.

Keystone Health’s support extends beyond the donation of the equipment. They also provide the program with instructional materials and ongoing support, ensuring that students receive the most out of this unique learning experience.

By stepping into the shoes of their future patients, Franklin County Career and Tech Medical Assisting students are gaining the skills and empathy needed to excel in their chosen field. The Aging Simulation package is a powerful tool that is shaping the next generation of healthcare providers, fostering compassion and understanding along the way.
