WAYNESBORO – Titus Mong made his return after missing three week due to a concussion, and Calvin Myers made a strong comeback to highlight Waynesboro’s 53-21 varsity wrestling win against James Buchanan on Thursday.

In a meet that saw five total forfeits (three by James Buchanan, the Indians won six of the nine contested matches, including five by pin and one by technical fall.

As for Mong, he weighed in at 172 pounds but wrestled up at 189. The weight differential didn’t bother him. Mong used a combination of raw strength and technique to pin James Cunningham in 1:27. Mong scored a quick takedown and added three back points before recording the first-period fall.

“Titus is such a bull,” said Waynesboro coach David Swink. “He likes to go out and use his muscles and upper body. He’s got great technique, and we want to see him use that too. He has an effective duck under and sliding single leg.”

By the time Mong wrestled, the outcome of the contest was already decided, and it was also the final bout of the night. The final four matches were all forfeits, with two on each side.

James Buchanan’s wins came at 121 and 152 pounds.

Steven Howard gave the Tribe its first win when he earned a technical fall at 127 pounds. Howard was fluid in this match, bunching up 12 points in the first period. He took down Chaz Kerr and added 10 nearfall points to nearly seal the match in the first two minutes.

Howard did end things in the second period. He started in the down position and got the reversal before turning Kerr to his back for two back points to get the tech fall in 3:29.

Colin Young gave up an early takedown but scored on a reversal and parlayed a cradle into a pin in 1:32.

Jayden Rooney earned his 75th career win as the junior pinned Finn Lorson in 3:29. Rooney played a game of cat and mouse, scoring on three takedowns in the first period and letting Lorson up twice. He scored on a takedown and three separate nearfalls totaling seven points. He was within a point of a technical fall but ended the bout with a fall in 3:29.

Myers took part in the match of the night at 145 pounds. He stood toe-to-toe with JB’s Alex Drake but trailed 7-3 in the third period. Brake started the third period with a reversal. Myers scored a point with an escape and somehow got in position to clamp down on a tight headlock for the pin in 5:29.

“Calvin wrestled their best kid,” Swink said. “It was good to see him catch that headlock at the end. Steven (Howard) was working through some stuff. It was good to see him come out ahead.”

After losing at 152 pounds, Waynesboro’s Logan Lowans pinned his opponent in 37 seconds at 160 pounds.

Waynesboro will compete in a team duals competition Saturday at Red Land. In addition to wrestling the Patriots, the Indians will go up against Central York, Garden Spot, Selinsgrove and South Western. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. from Lewisberry.
