WAYNESBORO – So far this young season, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams have done what they needed to notch their second wins of the season.

On Tuesday, under drizzly skies and chilly temperatures (in the upper 40s), the spring season showed its true colors by appearing more like mid-November than warming April. In that respect, no one was disappointed because it is what it is.

The Indians and Maidens used a numbers advantage coupled with some strong individual performances to defeat the Bulldogs. The Waynesboro boys’ team won 105-44, while the Maidens defeated the Lady Bulldogs 106-44.

Waynesboro head coach Jim Rickett was obviously pleased with the decisive victories, but he is waiting to see how his teams will fare against stiffer competition. They might get it next Tuesday when they travel to Adams County to face Gettysburg.

“Overall, I thought we performed about as well as could be expected with the weather conditions as iffy as they were,’ said Waynesboro coach. Jim Rickett, Unfortunately, our opponent was very limited in the number of athletes they had as they didn’t compete in several events, especially on the girls’ side. Our girls are strong in many areas but the boys continue to show promise, so every meet is a learning experience and ways to find out what we have.

“For me, it was getting out with no injuries or aggravating current injuries more. We did that for the most part. Conditions this year have been tough – cold and rainy for the most part and everyone is dealing with it the best they can.”

There were 18 events in each meet, and the Waynesboro boys’ squad won 16 of them, including 10 of 11 track competitions. Owen Shockey won both hurdling events. He captured first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.9 seconds and was tops in the 300 hurdles (45.2 seconds).

Noah Bockstie was also a double winner. His specialty was distance running events. Bockstie won the 1600-meter run and the 3200 run (11:01). Michael Calo won the 400-meter dash in 54 seconds and ran the final leg of the winning 3200 relay event, which finished in 9:11.8. Julian Mencia, Nicholas Soffe, and Will Campbell also ran in the event.

Mencia added first place when he won the 800-meter run (2:13.7).

Preston Hammond also grabbed gold by winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.3 seconds.

Waynesboro’s Grant Thompson took first place in the high jump (5-6) and triple jump (39-1). Teammate Alex Torbica made it a sweep of the jumping events when he won the long jump (17-1).

Meanwhile, Hayden Nolan won the pole vault (9-0), while teammates Joshua Lynch and Ethan McDonald were second and third, respectively.

Ben Williams was the lone winner in the throws. He won the javelin throw (146-1).

In the girls’ meet, Waynesboro won 14 events, including all of the track events. Jada Creager won the 100 dash (12.5 seconds) and then walked across the field to the pole vault and won that event with a vault of 10 feet.

Gracie French won the 100-meter hurdles (17.4 seconds) as well as the 200-meter dash (26.9 seconds).

Jaeda Dockman won the long jump (14-7) and finished second in the high jump. Ana Enfusse was victorious in the triple jump with a winning jump of 32 feet. True Benchoff placed first in the 300 hurdles (49.2 seconds), while Alie Briegel won the 400-meter dash in 1:08.5. Also placing first was Ella Swart in the 1600 (6:02.4).

Finally, Isabella Ruefle won the 800-meter run (2:41.0) and Maddie Ruefle finished first in the 3200 (13:42).
