SNIFF NOTES: Chihuahua Mix Apples Seeks Loving Home for Remaining Years

You all, I have to tell you about Apples.

Not the fruit, but a super sweet, special needs dog at the animal shelter right now.

Apples came in because his owners could no longer care for him. He’s a Chihuahua mix who’s just a little guy (only about 17 pounds) and he’s about 10 years old.

Because of his age, he’s got the beginning of cataracts, but that doesn’t stop him.

Recently, we found out that Apples is in the first stages of congestive heart failure, so we are looking for a place for this little guy to spend the time he’s got in a loving home, instead of a shelter.

He’s on two different medications and he’s doing well on them and doesn’t mind taking them – as long as they are in some food.

We’re hoping to find a home for him where the people would be willing to work with a vet to keep Applies comfortable and adjust medications as needed. It would be good for Apples to also have a cardiologist as well.

He will cough every once in a while, but otherwise this guy is happy go lucky.

Because of his age and issues, he doesn’t do terribly well with children, so an adult-only home would be best for him. He did pretty well with our cat who tests out our dogs at the shelter. Still, supervision with Apples and a cat would probably be best, especially in the beginning.

Despite all his issues, this little guy is a fun character.

I took him with me recently to talk with the AARP in Chambersburg and he did really well. He was happy to get to ride in the car and loved sniffing out the window. I only let him have just a little bit of the open window because I’m always scared of animals jumping out while I’m driving.

He wanted to sit in my lap from time to time, too. He’s a real sweetheart.

There may have been a few treats for Mr. Apples when we talked to the folks at the meeting. But that’s really more of a rumor than anything. *wink*

While I was talking to the group, he sat next to one of the ladies and just let her rub his back. I swear he didn’t move once from that spot.

Apples just wants to be around people and be loved. That’s all.

I know we’re asking a lot with this guy. I realize that. I’m just hoping there might be someone out there who would be willing to give Apples a nice life for whatever time he has left. He really does still have a spring in his step and a zest for life and deserves to live his remaining years in a home where he can snuggle with that special someone.

I’m hoping that by writing about him, someone might reach out and consider helping him.

He really does deserve that second chance.

Please check out cvas-pets.org and follow the links for adoptable dogs and see if Apples might find his way into your heart for his remaining time here.

I have a feeling you’ll be glad you did.
