DILLSBURG – Preston Hammond placed second in the boys’ 200-meter dash and third in the 100 dash to highlight Waynesboro at the annual Arctic Blast Invitational hosted by Northern York High School on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Waynesboro’s Jada Creager was second in the girls’ 100-meter dash finals, while teammate Lainey Peyton placed fifth. Creager’s second-place time was 12.74 seconds. Northern York’s Alexa Rank won with a time of 12.58 seconds.
Hammond finished fourth in the preliminary heat with a time of 11.47 seconds. He improved to 11.25 seconds and a third-place showing. Harrisburg’s Sekou Bryan won both the prelim and the finals (11.11).
Bryan edged Hammond in the 200 dash. Hammond crossed the finish line a razor’s edge behind Bryan with a time of 22.65 seconds. Bryan finished with a winning time of 22.27 seconds.
Bryan’s efforts in both events gave Waynesboro 14 team points.
Waynesboro’s Grant Thompson provided more highlights on a cool and very windy Saturday. Thompson placed second in the boys’ high jump. His 5-10 inch jump wasn’t even close to Harrisburg’s Ty-Shawn Ewings’ 6-6 effort, but it was better than 14 others in the top 16.
Thompson then placed fifth in the triple jump (40-2).
Waynesboro’s 3200-meter relay team placed third (9:06.81). Gettysburg won with a time of 8:55.87, and Susquenita was second (9:03.07).
Ben Williams represented the Indians in the throwing events, placing fourth in the javelin throw (145-3). He was ninth in the shot put.
Waynesboro’s Owen Shockey delivered good efforts in the 110-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles. Shockey placed fifth in the 110 hurdle finals (17.12 seconds). He placed fourth in the preliminary race.
Shockey also finished fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.10 seconds.
Waynesboro managed to earn a team point by placing sixth in the 400 relay (46.04 seconds).
Noah Bockstie and Will Campbell placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 3200-meter run.
Waynesboro finished fourth out of 18 teams with 39 points.
In girls’ competition, Creager improved on her preliminary race time of 13.08, which assured her of a runner-up spot.
Waynesboro’s Gracie French finished fifth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.93 seconds. She was perhaps a lunge from finishing seconds, which was held by Eastern York’s Halana Brubaker (26.30 seconds).
True Benshoff turned in an impressive second-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles. She finished in 48.93 seconds, while Annika Barrett of Northern York won with a time of 48.49 seconds. Waynesboro’s Sierra Ray was fifth in the event (50.89 seconds), and Maidens Charlotte Rhodes finished eighth.
Benshoff finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Her time was 16.52 seconds. French was two spots behind her, claiming sixth place in 17.31 seconds. Benshoff was another competitor who improved on her prelim time (16.91) that would have dropped her to sixth place.
Waynesboro’s 400 relay team nearly edged out Boiling Springs before settling for second place at 53.41 seconds. The Bubblers celebrated the top spot with a time of 53.28 seconds.
The Maidens placed fourth in the 3200 relay (12:11.11).
Waynesboro’s Jaeda Dockman finished second in the girls’ high jump (5-0).
Creager added a third-place finish in the girls’ pole vault (10-06) to her second-place finish. She tied with Boiling Springs’ Isabel Petula but took more attempts.
Teammate Camryn Bonner was fourth in the pole vault (9-0).
Waynesboro’s Katie Baker was seventh out of 44 competitors in the girls’ discus throw (93-10).
Waynesboro will host Shippensburg in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division dual meet on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
