The City of Frostburg will once again be the site of a pirate invasion on Wed., July 10 when the Children’s Literature Centre at Frostburg State University and the City of Frostburg team up to provide a free day of pirate merriment, tales, treasures and treats for young children of the region.

The day will begin at City Place at 9 a.m. where children can gather. They are also encouraged to wear their best pirate costumes and attire. At 9:15 a.m., children will have the opportunity to participate in the “Scallywag Walk” to the Hotel Gunter for the pirate author/illustrator presentation. Once at the hotel, buccaneers can meet Will and Jane Hillenbrand, author and illustrator of the fabulous picture book, What A Treasure! They will present at 9:30 a.m., and all pirate attendees at the presentation will receive a tasty treasure, as well as the chance to win surprise give aways.

Buccaneer activities for the day include pirate crafts, interactive games, a coin and seashell dig and balloon art beginning at 10:15 a.m. at City Place on Water Street. Pirates can also participate in a “Mystery Pirate Treasure Hunt” along Main Street, where they will use clues to solve a riddle and win prizes. While on the hunt, children can enjoy a pirate pit stop for a cold beverage and some yard game fun at St. Michael’s courtyard, sponsored by FrostburgFirst.

The Frostburg Police Station will host Lemonade with the Law, where children can enjoy a kid-friendly demonstration courtesy of the Frostburg Fire Department.

Frostburg businesses and restaurants will be open throughout the day, with special bargains for visiting buccaneers. Additionally, this year the event will host sweet treat food trucks that include Kona Ice, The Poppin’ Kettle, and Turtle Treats.

The Pirate Ahoy after party will be held at the Frostburg Freeze where there will be lunch specials and a water slide for children. This Pirates Ahoy event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Children’s Literature Centre at 301-687-3133 or clc@frostburg.edu.  Visit www.frostburg.edu/clc/piratesahoy or check out their Facebook page for more details.
