HARRISBURG- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the northbound Interstate 81 Welcome Center, located about a mile north of the Maryland state line in Franklin County, will be closed this Thursday, August 1, so a backup generator can be installed at the facility.
The Welcome Center is expected to be closed from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. this Thursday.
The next available rest area on northbound I-81 is located just north of Exit 37 (Route 233/Newville).
This work is a Guaranteed Energy Savings Act (GESA) project, initiated by PennDOT and the Department of General Services in 2021. GESA projects upgrade heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting systems to improve energy efficiency in buildings and decrease growing energy costs. These upgrades significantly reduce energy usage which result in decreased utility spending.
