HAGERSTOWN, Md. — An educator, described as displaying “a passion for student success” was honored by Hagerstown Community College recently as the 2024 Faculty Member of the Year.

Joseph Marschner, assistant professor of music and drama, wound up his 35-year association with HCC in June when he retired. He began his collegiate experience at HCC in 1989, where he earned an associate’s degree. Soon after, he took a job at HCC as a guitar instructor, when the music program first began.

He completed a bachelor’s degree in music composition at Shepherd University in 1992 and became the theater technician at HCC in 1993. He also served as an adjunct instructor for 10 years, before completing a master’s degree in modern humanities at Frostburg State University in 2002. In 2007, he was promoted to assistant professor of music and drama.

“Joe’s positive leadership and thoughtful guidance have had a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike over the course of many decades,” said Dana Poole, director of HCC’s English and Humanities Division. “He has a passion for student success that is infectious and inspires his colleagues toward that same goal.”

During his career, Marschner has served in a variety of roles on multiple committees, including Faculty Assembly chair, English and Humanities Division chair, and stage director/music director for numerous productions.

In terms of community involvement, Marschner has served as a board member for many organizations, including the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, Hub Opera Ensemble and the Maryland International Film Festival. He plays lead guitar in the local band “The Holders,” which originally formed in 1990.
