WAYNESBORO – The familiarity of its home course wasn’t enough to lift the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity golf team to its first win of the season on Monday, Aug. 19.

Playing at Waynesboro Country Club in the third Mid-Penn Colonial Division competition, Waynesboro finished with a score of 340 and placed fourth behind undefeated Northern York (328), Gettysburg (338) and Shippensburg (339). Waynesboro is 11-7 and tied with Shippensburg for third place in the division. Gettysburg (12-6) is in second place, while Northern – the defending league champions – is 18-0.

Northern’s Logan White was the medalist. He carded a 74. Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney, the medalist in the first two matches, was second overall with 75.

Waynesboro’s next three scorers were Caiden Shacreaw (85), Abby Byers (89) and Farin Parks (91).

“I am very proud and thankful to have this team,” said Waynesboro Coach Ryan Henderson. “I have several young, talented players. Tyler is the leader. He has played very well in the first three matches. It is too early for any significant rankings in the Mid-Penn at this point, but Tyler is certainly a fantastic player and likely in the top five of the Mid-Penn.

“Farin Parks has shown improvement from last year. He is playing in the top three consistently. Caiden Shacreaw, a rookie, has shown real potential. I look forward to seeing him develop over the next few years. Abby Byers is one of my returning players. Her game is somewhat volatile right now, so we are working on her scoring consistency. Landon Crable is also a returning player who has played in the top five every match.

“Rylan Nichols is a new player this year and shows great promise. Marissa Musolino is back as a senior. She will likely qualify for the postseason. Dominic Goodrich is a new player this year who is working to improve his game. I only have eight players on the roster.”

Waynesboro finished third in the season opener at Greencastle Golf Club. Fortney finished with a team-best 77. Fortney followed that up with an impressive 69 in the second match at Range End Golf Course in Dillsburg.

The next competition will be Thursday, Aug. 22, at Gettysburg National Golf Club in Fairfield.
