WAYNESBORO — Recovery and Recovery Month – observed in September – is the focus of a special event on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Main Street Park, featuring free food, music and activities for people of all ages.

“We just want to get everyone excited and bring about awareness … and provide the community with general information to assist individuals searching for help,” said Andrew Neel, community relations representative with Pyramid Healthcare Inc.

Pyramid, with an office at 626 N. Grant St. in Waynesboro, is hosting the Recovery Spectacular from 3 to 7 p.m. at Main Street Park, 23 E. Main St. Tuscarora Managed Care Alliance is the sponsor of the event. Tuscarora helps area Medicaid patients manage behavioral health care needs. Waynesboro’s Pyramid rehab center offers intensive outpatient treatment and a variety of services for adults and adolescents with mental health and substance use disorders.

“This is about fun and fellowship. That’s the general outlook and reason for this, and we hope to usher in Recovery Month on a positive note,” said Neel, who also is a certified recovery specialist.

“We are looking forward to having the opportunity to host this event. It will be carnival-themed, and we’re inviting all kinds of providers for behavioral health from around Franklin County to join us.”

The event features free food, live music by a deejay and carnival games, with players receiving a raffle ticket to win prizes such as a rocking camp chair, YETI tumbler, Stanley tumbler, Shakespeare Ugly Stik spinning rod, Under Armour gym bag and pickleball set, according to Neel. Prizes for children include remote-controlled race cars, stuffed animals and the Hungry Hungry Hippos game, among others, he added.

“A big part of this is to bring about awareness of advocacy and services help available for people suffering substance abuse. It’s a good way to introduce individuals new to recovery that fun is possible in recovery. (The event) also provides a safe place for families and individuals and allies of recovery to join, meet each other and strengthen the recovery community within Franklin County,” Neel said.
