Maryland welcomed a new sport last week: Girls flag football.

The sport made its debut on Wednesday, with three teams from the Local.News area throwing down. North Hagerstown topped South Hagerstown by a 24-2 score, while Smithsburg fell 13-6 to Boonsboro.

Traditional football also made its return in Maryland last weekend, with South Hagerstown nailing down a win in its opener against Century.

In Pennsylvania, the backyard rivalry between Waynesboro and Greencastle-Antrim is about to heat up, as the Indians and Blue Devils each stand in the other’s way of a path to a Mid-Penn Colonial Division crown. In girls volleyball, Waynesboro and Greencastle are tied for first place with a 4-0 division record, while the schools are also entrenched in a girls soccer battle, with the programs tied for second with 3-1 division marks.

Another area girls soccer team, North Hagerstown, is off to unbeaten start at 2-0. Speaking of North Hagerstown, the Hubs opened their cross country season at the Hood Invitational, with Lauren Stine taking the top spot in the girls race with a time of 18:41.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
