CHAMBERSBURG – Shalom Christian Academy has broken ground for a 42,000-square-foot expansion. This $17 million development marks a pivotal step forward in providing state-of-the-art classrooms, athletics and fine arts spaces for students and staff, Shalom officials noted.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Director of Development Suzanne Poe emphasized the project’s. “God has brought us to this time and place… He has led us to this site, heard our prayers, guided our plans and will provide the wisdom needed to complete this facility,” she said.

“I want to thank those who pledged early to get this project started—those who saw the vision and know it’s not just about bricks and mortar,” she said. “It’s about the future of our children. It’s about building the Kingdom of God. We aim to supply students with the space they need, advancements in educational technology and gathering spaces for our community to enjoy extracurricular and athletic activities.”

The expansion, a steel structure, will include a state-of-the-art gymnasium; six secondary classrooms including science labs and enhanced learning environment to grow with changing technological advancements; disability compliant upgrades and an elevator to accommodate those with physical restrictions; increased parking space and on-campus roadways to safely and adequately service families, faculty, staff, students and guests; fine arts space; and dedicated concessions area.

Designed with the latest educational standards in mind, the facility aims to foster an engaging and innovative learning environment. “It’s all for our students,” said Administrator Angie Petersheim. “The expansion will provide vital meeting space to bring our PreK through 12th grade classes together for important events and activities. Our student body will benefit the most from this project.”

The event was attended by school representatives and board members, construction company representatives and Pennsylvania State Representative Rob Kauffman (R-Chambersburg), along with enthusiastic Shalom student government members. While the groundbreaking ceremony took place this month, a 30 week prayer campaign for the project began in February, inviting the Shalom community to lift up the initiative in prayer before any dirt was moved. Prayer continues to be a vital part of the project, school officials noted.

The expansion project was awarded to Brechbill & Helman (General Contractor), David H. Martin Excavating (Site Contractor) and Galbraith Pre-Design Construction (Steel Building Supplier and Erector). Fundraising for the project is ongoing through The Bridge Forward Capital Campaign project. Shalom is grateful for the early support of $4 million from key donors, which has been crucial to starting the $17 million project.
