STATE LINE – A “visit” from renowned Civil War hero Gen. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain will be the topic of the Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17. The public is invited to this unique historical presentation at the State Line Ruritan Building, off Route 11 at the State Line Community Park.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Rev. Bob McFarlane, a retired minister from Chambersburg. McFarlane is known for his expertise as a local Civil War historian and his skill in first-person presentations. This one is entitled “A Visit from General Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.”

Chamberlain is renowned for his gallantry at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, specifically for his actions at Little Round Top, which earned him the Medal of Honor. McFarlane will appear in full dress Union uniform, bringing the character of Chamberlain to life. The presentation will cover various aspects of the general’s life, including:

  • His personal values
  • Participation in the Civil War
  • Experiences in later years

Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a question and answer session with “General Chamberlain” as portrayed by McFarlane.

This event promises to offer a blend of historical education and theatrical performance, providing attendees with a unique perspective on one of the Civil War’s most celebrated figures. The Middleburg/Mason-Dixon Line Historical Society continues its tradition of bringing history to life through such programs, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the region’s rich historical heritage.
