CHAMBERSBURG – The Institute for Retired Persons is gearing up for an engaging week of lectures and activities featuring a blend of in-person and virtual sessions on a wide range of topics.

The week kicks off with a Zoom lecture on Monday, Sept. 30, at 9 a.m. Lloyd Muller will present “The Continuing Odyssey of African Americans,” a last-minute change to the original schedule. Another Zoom session is set for Wednesday, Oct. 2, when Anette Isaacs will deliver a talk on “Margarete Steiff: The Woman Behind the Teddy Bear.”

In-person lectures will be held at the Menno Haven Life Center on Tuesday and Thursday.

Tuesday’s lineup includes:

  • 9 a.m.: “Next Up, Frogs and Locusts: The 2024 Election” by Alison Dagnes
  • 10:30 a.m.: “Reconstructing the Past: Puzzle of the Lost Community at Yellow Hill” by Debra McCauslin

Thursday’s schedule features:

  • 9 a.m.: “Meet Thaddeus Stevens, the Greatest Unknown Person in American History” by Ross Hetrick
  • 10:30 a.m.: “Scams Targeting Seniors: Don’t Take the Bait” by Mary Bach

The IRP has seen strong engagement from its members, with an average of 33 participants in Zoom lectures and 57 attendees for in-person sessions. This hybrid model of virtual and physical meetings has allowed the organization to adapt to changing circumstances and continue providing learning opportunities for retirees.

Founded to bring continued learning activities to its members, the IRP offers lectures, demonstrations and multi-media programs on a wide range of subjects. This fall semester, which began on Sept. 9, offers a lineup of topics designed to stimulate intellectual curiosity and foster community engagement among retired individuals in the Chambersburg area.
